A little update. Momma and her two babies are doing great out in the run. One of my 6 eggs was way far ahead of the others. I estimated day 16 ish but I’m the furthest thing from an expert. It took me a good 24 hours to get the temp right in the incubator and the eggs were already in it so once...
Oh my lanta! My husband just informed me that there is another hen, red rock cross, that has been hiding behind a desk under the nesting boxes. I go look and sure enough there she is growling and fluffing up at me. Who knows how long she has been there for! Not only that but she is so far back...
So I went out tonight to move her to the new safer nest and she lifted her wing while attacking me to reveal a wet little black cheeping head. It’s probably the one that had pipped earlier so I’m letting her be for tonight and tomorrow I will move her and (fingers crossed) the two babies. The...
We have a broody. I should have moved her to the chick pen long ago but it had to be fixed up and I got busy. Honestly I didn’t think she’d hatch any. We have only one rooster to 33 hens and this hen is very flighty.
Well I went to candle her eggs today and i thought I would be chucking them all...
Update - I’m 99% sure it’s a rooster. His comb is very pink and he already squares up to you with his head high and pecks at your hand. None of our other roosters were this bold at 6 weeks. He also has the white colour pattern around his neck like a SLW rooster would have.
Man I hope you’re right. Aggressive roosters are always culled at our house, I really hope that’s not the case here. I would hate to have to off the one and only chicken we have ever hatched. I feel so invested in it now. This chicks dad is the most amazing rooster so fingers crossed.
Well, this little chick is a mean mean bully. She’s bigger than her two buddies, she’s always pecking at them and stealing their food from their beaks, and she ferociously pecks the kids hands when they try to hold her. Maybe this is a sign that it’s going to be an aggressive rooster?
May I ask why we can’t interact with it?
We brought it home 2 little friends and it perked right up and is cheeping again and snuggled up with its buddies. I’m surprised how much bigger it is than the other two who are one day older. That’s maybe why she was malpositioned?
Hmmm, she won’t come out of the heat cave. I’m getting a little worried about her. In the incubator she would tootle all over and peck at things bust since we moved her she just sleeps in the cave. This is the same setup I’ve used with all of our other day olds that we have bought in the past so...
So I moved her to the brooder all by her lonely self. I showed her the food and water but she doesn’t seem interested in the least. She did go back into the heating cave all by herself so that made me happy that she is able to find the heat. Is it still early for her to be eating and drinking...
Oh yes, she was up and about zooming around the incubator within a few hours after hatch. She was pecking at the styrofoam today so we just moved her lonely self to the brooder. I showed her the water and food and then put her under the heating pad. I’m on the hunt for a day old buddy to buy for...
There are only 2 eggs left. The one off to the side there is her shell. Neither of them are pipped this morning. I’m thinking they probably won’t.
She feels dry, but crunchy. Should I give her a bath?
Thanks gals. Do you think I should remove the chick in case the other two pip? I don’t think they will, but just in case? I took each one out and held them up to my ear and tapped a bit and nothing.
I took too long to help pipper #2. I took out the egg to get a look and there was blood and an unresponsive chick. I can’t help but feel like saving #1 cost me #2. Ugh!
Number 1 isn’t completely dry yet I think, but I’d like to take her out in case #’s 3 and 4 pip. I don’t want to have to open...
