Anyone know why this girl might be making this noise?

There was nothing in her mouth that we could see. On the reddit thread, a bunch of folks advised I put her back in the run with the others, and when i did, she did run straight to the nesting boxes. She does still seem to be making the noise, but not as frequently. I'll let y'all know if that...

Anyone know why this girl might be making this noise?

I came out to check on my flock this morning and found this girl doing what think might be wheezing? I have quarantined her on our back patio in a dog kennel with some water - I'll get her food in a bit, but other than the sound, she's otherwise behaving normally. This is the first I've noticed...

    Moral support needed.

I have been introducing my 9 week old pullets to my hens slowly. For a little over a week now, they've been kept in the same run, divided by a baby gate designed for folks with cats (it's 4.5 ft tall), and I've been putting the pullets back in their brooder box and moving them to the garage at...

Take your guesses. This little one is a three week old mystery chick from McMurray. Any ideas?

To me, they all currently look like vultures as they're feathering out. Haha!

    Using Chickens For Fertilizer?

Chicken excrement is considered a "hot" fertilizer, so you need to let it sit for at least 3 months before putting it on plants, or you'll burn them (with nitrogen). That said, it's an excellent fertilizer, once cool. :)

What did you do in the garden today?

I pulled out all our summer plants. Getting ready to put in the fall stuff probably sometime this weekend!

I appreciate the chicken towel from Costco setting off the same colors as your collected eggs!

Ended Official BYC Mini-Contest—Egg Basket Photo Contest

These days I use an actual carton for overflow. At one point I had collected more than 85 eggs and they were just everywhere, in the spiral, in the egg carton, in bowls, etc. Its so nice to get to share the abundance with family and friends when we can!

Later on, I got myself an actual container, but I still collect eggs in my pockets. I have, unfortunately, made a few pocket omelets this way! But the ones that make it inside to this pretty container sure do make a lovely sight, and make it easy to ensure I'm eating the oldest eggs first!

Ended Official BYC Mini-Contest—Egg Basket Photo Contest

When I took this photo, I didn't have anything I collected my eggs in regularly. I would put eggs in my pockets and bring them inside and put them in a bowl or a pot. I had been collecting these in a pot, because I knew I was going to be making deviled eggs in a couple days for a party, so when...

Having a broody hen raise chicks for me?

I'm conflicted. I have six hens, two of them (Phoenix's) go broody at least three to four times a year. I want to put that broodiness to good use by letting them hatch out some fertilized eggs for me, but all my hens are vaccinated against Marek's and coccidiosis. Because of this, I feed an...

    Random Gardening Talk

We start our veggie plants from seed (it's cheaper and there's more variety), so living in California, we sowed our pepper plants for this spring/summer indoors under some grow lights not this past weekend, but the weekend before. We got our first sprouted peppers this past weekend. We'll start...

Help! In California and afraid to order from hatcheries 1400 miles away.

Oh no! I had no idea. Thanks for sharing. I've only ever seen their stuff from their website or their Instagram. Was planning possibly ordering from them in the future, but I'll likely refrain given this new information! My girls are all from McMurray and they're healthy and happy.

Help! In California and afraid to order from hatcheries 1400 miles away.

What about a smaller breeder - Alchemist Farm is in Sonoma County and their ladies lay gorgeous eggs. I'm not sure if they're sending any chicks anymore this year, but they'll start doing so again in the spring.

The Ladies are Emptying Out the Nesting Boxes, Removing the Ceramic Eggs, and Laying In Different Areas!

Thank you for the help. We added another 1x2 to the bottom of the boxes this weekend and it's already working marvels!

The Ladies are Emptying Out the Nesting Boxes, Removing the Ceramic Eggs, and Laying In Different Areas!

Thank you for your reply. We did that this weekend, against my husband's better judgement that he thought it would make the boxes too high off the ground for them to enter, and I've discovered eggs in the boxes and the shavings staying put! Thanks so much for your help!

The Ladies are Emptying Out the Nesting Boxes, Removing the Ceramic Eggs, and Laying In Different Areas!

Hi All, Thank you for your support figuring out whether my chickens were pullets or cockerels. It was certainly nerve-wracking as someone who lives in a subdivision! All my ladies are happy and healthy. The four of seven that have actually begun laying (I figure the three others are waiting...
