Good news, both moms appear to have adopted the new chicks! I slipped them in the hen house last night and they let them in their feathers immediately. I kept an eye on them and both momma’s were parading around with new chicks and the old all day, no pecking, showing where food is etc.
The...
So just an update, I went and got 4 new chicks that are probably a handful of days old, but not quite as old as the other two.
When I came home, I went to introduce them and one of the other two chicks made it! She came out of the wood pile, so when it all went down I imagine she probably ran...
Hi all,
I had just gotten rid of my rooster when 2 of my hens went broody. I let one sit on her eggs since I knew they were still fertile and I figured I could try for another rooster....
Well, she hatched 2, and both the hens were parenting them great. Long story short, they were probably...
Just an update for you, I hobbled her and after a few days she was good as new. Her development was pretty far behind the others for the next few months, but now you can't even tell the difference between her and her sister :) thanks!
I’ll add some photos shortly! The coop space is 60sqft and the run size is 240sqft. It’s also 12ft high in the front and 8ft high in the rear so it’s cubic space is pretty good as well.
I’m in Grants Pass OR, so it doesn’t get terribly cold but it’ll drop below freezing for periods eventually...
Hi all, I’m in the process of integrating seven 10 week olds (all pullets) with eight 7 month olds (7 hens, one roo.)
I started them with the see but don’t touch method in the run—I set up a large pen with a roof inside the run so the big girls couldn’t dive bomb from their favorite roosting...
Hi everyone, I recently got a new batch of chicks in the mail--unfortunately two didn't make it past the first few hours despite giving them electrolytes etc--I think the heatwave we are experiencing may have been partly to blame.
The other seven have been doing great until yesterday when I...
Great, thanks a bunch! I think I'll keep one and get rid of 4---I'm leaning towards the olive egger since he's in charge right now anyways--but the light easter egger is really cool looking too!
I'll be adding some more to bring the flock up to 12-13 birds total, but most likely will be a...
Here is the rest of the flock this morning. Hard to get good photos of them all--they swarm me because I'm the treat guy.
These were all marked as pullets.
I know I have at least two hens, as there were 2 more eggs this morning!
Well since I have the 5 roosters that only leaves 7 hens. I had planned to have about 12 hens, so I’ll likely raise some more chicks, I’m just not sure if I want to do that now or next spring.
Their coop is 60 sq ft and the run is 240 sq ft.
Oh no! I was hoping at least the one darker easter egger was a hen!
I'll grab pictures of the rest of the flock tomorrow just to be sure the rest are hens--they should be, they were all pullets. The 5 posted were the only straight runs--what luck!
Someone's laying eggs already so at least I...
Hi all. This is my first time having chickens and while I didn't intend on having any roosters, I figured if I had one it would be okay..
Well, I'm pretty sure I wound up with 4 (out of 12 total!)
Here are some photos:
This one I'm pretty sure is a rooster--he crows and tends to be the leader...
