    Reproductive Problems

I grind up the shells from our eggs in a Bullet and give it back to my hens plus they have 24/7 access to the oyster shell. Some of the egg shells are really firm, others not so much. The hardest shells are from the youngest hens.

    I have a question

Thank you! It's in the back between her legs below her fluffy butt. What kind of antibiotics can I use and does it require a vet visit or can I get something at the feed store? Anything else I can do for her?

    I have a question

I have a 2.5 yr old RIR hen who has a swollen, rather firm, warm to the touch under belly. I found a really weird looking thing in the nest a couple weeks ago and I'm finding pieces of soft shells or eggs with no shell. She acts fine, she's eating, dust bathing etc. My granddaughter picked...

    Caged Bird and Parrot Thread!!!!

I've had my Red Lored Amazon for 37 years. She was impounded by animal control in the early 90's. Not one person asked about her so I took her home and have never regretted it. At the moment we have 2 cockatiels, 3 parakeets, (2 were separately flying loose and brought to me to care for,) and...

    Parrot Advice

I've had a few different large birds over the years that were rescues or ones people gave me. Some adult birds who are awesome, friendly, talking etc and for sale in a pet store or by a private citizen is one way to get one. If you get a pair they will choose each other over you. Sometimes but...

Seeking comments on 4' x 8' coop design (was: ....ultimate chicken tractor/mobile coop...)

I wish I had gone bigger from day one. At the time 4 x 8 feet sounded pretty big, and I only had 4 hens. 4 years later I wish I had made it WAAAY bigger. I just added 4 hens last summer and for being in a residential neighborhood I think they do ok and have enough room but they can't free-range...

UPGRADE run and coop SAND ON FLOOR?

I have tried a few different things over 4 years and sand for me has been the best, cheapest and the easiest to scoop. I use cement sand not kids play sand. It's a tad moist and that makes it easy to spread all over and it dries pretty fast. l scoop, with a dog scooping rake set, every day under...

Official BYC Poll: What type of bedding do you use for your chicken coop in the summer?

I've tried a few different things, mulch, cedar shavings and sand, for me, is easiest. If it gets wet it's no problem, it's easy on my girls feet and mine (I am barefoot 95% of time). I actually scoop my coop and the big enclosure and the area at the attached tunnels every day, anywhere the...

    Chicken tunnel

I have a "chunnel" as my neighbor calls it. My girls destroyed my lawn in my back yard and the dirt the dogs brought inside was horrible!!! So I attached 6 pieces of chicken tunnel to their huge enclosure that is attached to their 8' x 4' coop. It goes along by my strawberry garden and ends at...

It's AMAZING. My coop is only 8x4 and looking back I should have made it bigger because I have the room.

    Egg laying while roosting

I've have that happen too every once in a while. My roost is a bit higher and the floor of the coop is sand. AND, the nesting boxes are about 4-6 feet away. The egg is usually broken and pretty much eaten by the time I get out there to find it.

    Favorite breed for eggs?

I bought 4, week old chicks from Tractor supply, 2 RIRs and 2 Anconas ( we had to buy four..I don't know what I was thinking 🤔) I knew nothing about Anconas but those little gals started laying at 18 weeks and they've both laid just about every day since! They're still laying small white eggs...

    Favorite breed for eggs?

I LOVE Rhode Island Reds. They are consistent egg layers and have wonderful personalities. I have 4 in my flock of 8 and I love them. But I also know there are likely loads of other breeds that are much better. Guess we have to wait and see.

    Egg laying issue

I have a weird egg thing too. I have 8 hens, 4 are older.. almost 4 years, the other 4 are 6 mos. Someone is intermittently laying these long eggs? it looks like it was poured out? It looks like it is just a long wet shell with no yolk? I have a picture but for some reason I can't post pictures...
