    Run light

I'm putting lights in the coop and run, with a timer on them to turn on at 2 a.m and stay on til 8 a.m. This way the chickens get the "normal" dusk and go off to bed as it is getting dark earlier and earlier here with winter setting in. They get the natural bedtime fading of light then out of...

Chicken Newbie - I need help!

How the chicks and duckies doing? I'm in Nebraska as well, and a new chicken owner as well as of this last June. It has been a learning experience for sure, and I'm thankful for this site and the experienced users that have shared so much information with us newbies. What did you decide to do...

    Weak chick?

As others mentioned I'd mix some Nutri-drench into their water. You can also mix in probiotics into their feed, or I put it in their water myself. I've had a few of these myself and as well as the aforementioned I once a day give them a tiny bit of either molasses mixed into a bit of water or...

So sorry to hear that. Unfortunately despite the best we can do nature sometimes decides against what we want. You did what you could, take heart in that.

    falling chick

Is the chick pooping ok? How about the crop, is it emptying? I had a few day old chick that I found on its back in my brooder. I determined that it had and impacted crop and took steps. It ended up pooping out some massive seeds that I have no idea where it got them (they were shipped day old...

First time dealing with impacted crop- advice please!

😆 I would make the water nice and warm, but not too hot. Hold her gently but firmly on both sides and lower her slowly down until its about half up her sides or so. The warmth should relax her. I'd talk softly to her, that might help as well. Good luck!

First time dealing with impacted crop- advice please!

I have had luck with olive oil administered slowly with a dropper and gently rubbing the crop. I had a few day old chick that was clearly in distress, after some oil and massage the crop cleared and it passed some large seeds it must have gotten at the hatchery somehow. Your hen is old enough...

Just bought a chick with pasty butt

I'm certainly not the most experienced around but yes that looks bad. I had one about the same, I took the little guy and soaked his rear in a warm cup of water, using a Q-Tip to gently rub his bum and it slowly worked all of it off. I think you can give her some olive oil if you have a dropper...

    Emergency - predator visit

I am sure there are many more experienced people that can help, but I would advise giving him some Nutri-drench or something similar for a boost. Maybe take him inside and keep him in a dog cage or something so he knows he is safe? Soft food might be good, easier for him to eat and digest and...
