Thank you. I've never had SLM before and kept seeing that people were soaking their birds. I'll just keep up with the Vaseline or maybe I'll switch to castor oil. We have rat problems so I don't want to use vegetable oil. I'll do ivermectin in 14 day intervals then.
I realized wild birds were...
I did some research including asking Chatgpt how to treat scaly leg mites in my chickens. They also had northern fowl mites and red mites I think.
Last week, I got a plan to give them a foot soak twice a week for the first week with Epsom salts, Vaseline + sulfur rub 2-3x a week. I also dosed...
I know I mentioned the bucket trick in my last post but I just tried it and my rooster drowned. It was my fault for trying to soak more than one chicken at a time. Please be careful if you give your chickens a foot soak and supervise them at all times. I stepped away for 30 seconds but that was...
We actually just cut down all our brush so there isn't any area big enough to put an entire coop in the shade. Ah, I didn't even think about condensation! Something to think about. Thanks!
I'm considering repurposing a resin shed into a chicken coop after this summer's battle with mites, lice and SLM! Just wondering what the insulation is like for those with plastic coops? Would a metal shed be better? I'm open to any material that will make it easy to clean from mites. My bf also...
I only recently found out my chickens have scaly leg mites and this is my first time dealing with it. I was getting conflicting info on whether Elector PSP was effective for scaly leg mites when I asked Chatgpt but people are saying it worked for them.
I wish I had tried Elector PSP first as a...
I had sprayed that door with permethrin a few weeks ago so maybe dead red mites? I washed the door with warm soap and water and sprayed it with Elector PSP just in case since I had some I already made today.
So I was finally able to weigh him. He's about 10 pounds. I soaked his feet this morning and saw that his belly is red and raw. And I think he has both northern fowl mites and red mites. They were gray and brownish red and I think they were moving too slow to be lice. I only saw these on him. I...
From that article, it does look like they most likely had lice. I checked them last week and didn't see any.
What would you recommend cleaning the coop with for scaly leg mites? I'm reading that they live on the legs so Elector PSP and Permethrin aren't going to kill them. I'm unable to wash...
@Wyorp Rock I actually have some sulphur I bought a few years ago the last time they had mites. I think I'll mix some of that with Vaseline or mineral oil and apply it to all of their feet. I'm also reading that I should treat their coop and the yard. Would I use Permethrin or can I use neem oil ?
I found mite eggs on one of the hen's vents and mites on another hen's vent. I washed those hen's bums with soap and water and sprayed everyone with Permethrin and cleaned the coop and sprayed their coop and my yard with permethrin. I checked them on Tuesday when I sprayed everything with neem...
I'll try and catch him later to weigh him and take pics of the bottom of his feet.
Would I have to separate him or treat everyone? Should I try Ivermectin since they had mites?
I give them the Dumor 17% all flock feed and leave it out all day.
Here he is at 5 months old. He was sick when he was a few weeks old and had trouble standing so I gave him poultry cell for a few months. Not sure if that's what fattened him up or if he's just naturally fat.
He's a Rhode Island Red. He seems to be walking fine otherwise. I'd have to check under his feet next time they're sleepy.
He's always been a big boy. Maybe we've been giving them too many treats lately since we've been eating watermelon and giving them the peels on top of their treats of...
