I had the same worries with my 3 inherited chickens. They're fearful of anything new in their run & only seem to be happiest eating or foraging. Have you tried a treat ball, either suspended or grounded? Or placing treats on a log as a treat? What about little mirrors or hanging toys & perches...
I would love to hear about your experience ie; do's & don'ts as I'm considering getting chicks in the future to add to my current flock of three 18 month old hens.
I am so sorry, I figured that would do the trick! I have 3 "pre-owned" 18-month old girls that act that way & was hoping any new chicks I introduce to the fam would be different. Have you handled them regularly since hatching?
I only have 3 girls and am working from home so I have ample time *at the moment* to poop scoop (3×/daily), refresh everything & supervise foraging (1-3 hrs/daily), all of which are part of a welcome routine. However, my biggest anxiety-inducer is the thought of predators. I cannot tell you how...
I'm considering getting 2 or 3 more chickens next spring & had concerns regarding integration. This is incredibly helpful as now I can prepare beforehand. Thank you for this info & thanks @CKfarm22 for posing the question!
Would you mind either responding or posting/directing us to an article for the reason for each of these please? There are a few I can't even guess the appropriate use for haha Thanks in advance!
I just got 2 weird ones today, like the one on the right in your pictures. My girls are over a year old, eat oyster shell & the eggs are strong so I'm curious about this too! We did just have a couple hot then rainy/flooded days this week so I'm thinking stress?
What a dream! Looks beautiful &, more importantly, secure! We also learned our lesson the hard way with the chicken wire so we added the mesh wire around the entirety of the coop & run. Girls have been safe for almost a year now (fingers crossed)!.
Awww what a cool interest & passion to share! I can't imagine having more than 3 right now! People bust on me for how much I dote on my girls but they make me so happy so who cares what they say! 🤪
I'm waiting for the moment when one of them will jump up & relax on me. Only 1 of the 3 will jump up on me so far after a year with them a few hours a day.
