Thanks for the replies. I guess the best thing is to get him off layer pellets and offer him another ration. He normally shares a coop w/ 4 hens so I guess I just leave it up to each chicken what to eat if both are available...?

My 1 yr old RIR rooster has suffered two bouts of crop impaction since December. He became emaciated, lethargic and dehydrated. Now that is appears he'll survive the second bout, I'm wondering if there's something better to feed him than layer pellets. I currently have him on a pretty soft...
Thank you. I live a long way from the vet so I'll check w/ some other poultry people I know to see if they have terramycin (in the meantime, I ordered some). I am embarrassed to say I don't remember the name of the antiobiotic he was on - it was a mycin I do know that.
Again, thanks for the...
My 1 year old rooster isn't well. His comb is more blackish than red, especially at the tips. He has runny stool; I cleaned him up last night and it didn't look too bad today. He is lethargic and just doesn't feel well. This same bird had crop problems right before Christmas. Then, the vet (not...
Thanks for everyone's advice. We'll separate them from the hens - or from each other - for the time being and also consider re-homing the subdominant one.

Thanks. Could you help me by telling me what the search topic should be? I've tried searching this site with "caponizing adult rooster" (got one post about a young bird) and "neutering adult rooster." I must not be wording this correctly.

Thanks! I was hoping they just throw an odd one now and then. I add crushed shell to their pellets but don't know the correct amount. Any help? A feed store chicken raisin' woman told me layer pellets had adequate calcium and there was no need to supplement. Is this inaccurate? Thanks.
For the past couple of days, I've been itching and my daughter has picked some chicken mites off me. About two months ago we had a rooster who had a pretty bad mite infestation and at the vet's recommendation, dusted him w/ 5% Sevin (I'm not a fan of Sevin but it sure did the trick).
Should I...
Last spring we began our poultry experience with what we had hoped was 6 hens. Turns out two were roosters and the kids love them like puppies. The alpha chases and beats up the other one when the 2 of them and the 4 hens are in the big, open yard. I know having more hens would help but I'd like...
One of our hens, I'm not sure which, laid a half-size egg without a yolk. The hens are from 11-18 months old. One, a Jersey Giant, doesn't lay regularly in the winter. Is this just her system starting up as the days lengthen?? Could it have been laid by one hen who is the far and away favorite...
