i put 3 ceramic eggs in the nest. they lasted a week or so before she ejected them. there are now 10 eggs in the nest with no sign of either hen hanging it up for the season.
they're still breeding daily, but it is becoming less often - i think.
i have an 11 month old brown chinese goose hen who has been laying pretty consistently since october. i'm becoming concerned because it's gone on for so long. i've put 3 ceramic eggs in her nest, she just keeps on laying.
is there anyone here who has had this experience & can offer advice?
I ended up placing a hatchery order for two female brown chinese goslings. They arrived on 4/13 - Easter week the same as my boys. I have yet to hear from the farm with the toulouse, so I'm glad I had a back-up. These 'girls' are so sweet & we're all so happy with them. I've named them Frances &...
I think it's important to remember that as somewhat long-lived, extremely social creatures...they're going to go through developmental stages. They grow & explore & learn so much in that first year alone.
For me it was very important to be as hands-on as I could raising my two goslings last...
I've read in a few places that the French/Utility/Production Toulouse goslings grow & put on weight more rapidly than other breeds. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Every night I provide a bowl of peas & greens to my boys when I close them up in the evening as I do not put grain or water inside overnight. I prefer to think of it less as a *bribe* & more of an *equitable arrangement*.
Is it correct in thinking it would be best to add any new birds until after breeding season? Part of me wants to do the 'natural order' thing & acquire two female goslings, hand-raise them, & let them interact with my boys when they're ready. Another part of me has a growing anxiety about the...
These are my first geese & they are still young. Their advances can be shut down with a firm "no" or just getting up & walking away. You're very correct to say it's better than the alternative!
So it looks like the best thing might be to find two young hens to introduce my boys to. I've been...
I have two 10 month old brown Chinese ganders. I spent a lot of time with them as goslings & until recently, they've been wonderful. As we know, it's nearing breeding season & I can barely stand still around them, let alone sit & enjoy their company, without unwelcome advances. I have always...
the boys i have now seem to get along pretty well. someday, once i have more facilities, i'd like to add more. but for now, i'm just glad they're getting along.
one step at a time, lol. honestly, as much as i'd love more geese i'm worried the space is too small. their secure overnight run is only 6x12 & the coop/house has a 4x4 base. they're only confined inside overnight or if i am away & have a large yard to graze all day.
i have two ganders that hatched out earlier this year. it's tempting to add more - either another set of ganders or hens. i know they're very social birds & i wonder if more birds might be better for them.
