The above just had a few more photos. I didn't actually post photos of the specific girls I'm keeping. I have a lot of chickens. Catching them and getting photos isn't very easy. Getting them trained is, bug I don't encourage my chickens to hang out with people generally. That makes life...
I learned that all 3 with green legs are pullets. They are very attractive and vigorous. All three were cross bred but looked like pure Chantecler even though I saw them hatch out of Buckeye eggs. I have 3 mostly barred gene males and one with the Buckeye coloration, solid color that didn't show...
I'm actually only keeping two or three of the hens. One has a nice cushion comb like the Chantecler's, and the other two have very tiny tight pea combs. They are hardy and vigorous. I only crossed them to see if they performed better as a meat bird and I can say, the hybrid vigor did work, but...
I've never heard of them choking on a mouse, but I've always wondered about that; some of my large fowl cough on seeds that are big, wondered about things bigger... I'm sorry.
Glad you have another Welsummer. Weird. Maybe someone else has come across this??
The buff, cuckoo patterned Cockerel in the foreground is one. The grey spotted one in with the Chantecler's and the Columbian patterned one is also this cross.
This is an old thread, but I just was sent 3 range Sussex as a replacement for another breed I ordered from sandhill. I'll let you know if you're still interested in these guys at this point in time.
One more thing to note (I forgot to mention), that these are our of 2 Chantecler roosters. One has the best temperament but his waddles are bigger than I'd like and one, who has the perfect body but is a royal pain.
Below is a group shot where you can see some different leg colors and the one...
Hey guys,
I have white Chantecler's and Buckeye's. My Chantecler's come from old original line genetics, and were not a recent project by the breeder I got them from. My Buckeye's came from a breeder that crossed the Shumaker and Lay lines, and had a closed flock for more than a decade.
Lot's...
I only have the white Chantecler right now, but I like #2 better as well, assuming that #2, is the bottom photos. I like his overall shape better, he has nice feathers, and his waddles appear slightly smaller.
This is an old post, but I just saw it today. It made me laugh! I have Chantecler’s too, and though most started laying around 20 weeks, two held out until this month.. they will be one year old on May 6th!!!!!
Mine all lay in the nesting box, but not two of my buckeyes. They sound like your...
These are our best breed for winter. (Zone 5). They charge out into the snow like it’s not snowy. Even our Chantecler’s try and avoid the snow 🙄.
These are great for kids!
Ours come to our front door every day at 3pm because I used to feed them at 3 as younger chicks.
Thanks. 99% of my property is on a hill. I have only one level area by a creek that’s fine for July and August, but too wet otherwise. I think I’m going to end up having a few different tractors that are moved each in a smaller area, rather than the whole property. Most of it is woods.
I have a...
Welcome. I must say, I’m glad you posted about the Justin Rhodes chicken tractor and snow. I live in zone 5, so our snow here at the farm gets thigh high regularly during our windy winters.
I wanted to build one of these with a bit of modification, as my property is very hilly. The wind shifts...
