My ducks have been chaotic of late but I guess it is because two girls are sitting on eggs. When it is feed time, one girl comes off the eggs and starts creating; all the ducks follow suit; its hectic in the pen!
Yes, separating the ducks is a good idea. I have recently found a problem with ducks wanting to hump my hens, and they are now temporarily separated in the large pen. Soon we will make them their own shelter and pen. Apparently it is dangerous for drakes to hump hens!
Hi Olive, I too am from Australia NSW, and am new to keeping chooks. So far so good, with only one hen missing a day of laying every so often. I give them oyster shell grit, and thought this was for calcium, not knowing that it will help with egg blockage (can't think of the correct term right...
This gives me a great idea of what to do with our small duck pond which we make inside the pen. It is too difficult to empty and the water gets really green (nasty). We decided to empty it completely and to build a channel so that rainwater does not fill it up again. Then we will fill it with...
Dear Debbie,
Your response makes the most sense so far. My nitial thought was that because she "peed" quite heavily on my lap (she was blanketed and I held her all the way home), this was pre-existing. I then accepted the explanation from the seller, that "a prolapse occurs quickly and due to...
Hello Bird People,
I brought a young peahen home yesterday.
She was in a blanket on my lap, and she peed on my lap, quite heavily.
When I put her in her new pen, the other peahen welcomed her like a sister. Later she was roosting alongside a new guinea member to the pen, the older peahen and two...
4 years later, I am convinced that I was sold old birds, as my peacock and peahen have large spurs (only found out about this as showing age). The cock displays relentlessly for everyone (ducks, chooks, guineas), the hen is disinterested. No sign of mating, and no sign of eggs. I forgot, when we...
I have two similar looking chooks, and when I bought them the chap said they were ready to lay. One laid straight away, and the other took another week or so. The good layer doesn't miss a day, and the other (who does not seem to eat as much, or is not as quick to catch the worms), misses a day...
Thank you for caring about your bird members : ) We have moved since I joined, and took our two peafowl, three ducks and three ducklings with us. We did not have a good pen (had to build a secure one), and unfortunately lost a drake and three ducklings. The peas are still fine, however, I think...
