Thank you. I’ve just been out and fed her some yoke mixed with sugar. Not a great outlook sadly, she’s more lethargic than earlier. Didn’t even attempt to move when I approached and picked her up. ☹️
Hi all,
One of my pair of little barbu d’uccles has started extending her neck and gasping. She seems to be struggling to get air, classic gaping. She is off her food, no time for food if you can’t breathe, right? Somewhat legthargic.
The sad truth of the matter is that we don’t have any...
Thank you very much for your help with this, sadly Florence died this evening. I guess I didn’t get there in time.
I’m going to test the rest of the flock for worms.
Thanks again. Dave
I did test the flock for worms, but I’ve just checked and this was back in July 2021. I’ve just read I should be doing it every 6 months 🙀
Given she is poorly would you recommended testing for worms (with the associated postage delays) or just treat the entire flock with medicated feed?
She’s the youngest in the flock - around 8 months old. Never laid or been wormed; I guess the winter came as she would have just started laying.
Her abdomen feels firm, although she is pretty scrawny so she’s pretty firm all over real, except around her vent.
Sad to say this girl isn’t improving.
She’s doesn’t seem to have constipation any more, but still a very gummed up vent with now what looks like diarrhea? I’ve been bathing her every day but it just reappears. Pic from this morning attached, I bathed her nice and clean and it’s just as bad...
Thanks again. I think I’ve got to the bottom of it now (if you’ll forgive the pun!); I think she is constipated.
I kept her in the kitchen last night and it STUNK this morning. I gave her a warm bath with some of the kids baby shampoo and found another hard poo struggling to get out. As soon...
Thanks both! I gave her a bath this evening. There was a big mass inside her vent which I manipulated and fairly large amount of poo came out. Very smelly almost like a broody poo.
Some of the vent was definitely prolapsed, so I gently pushed that back in and applied a little bit of the kids...
One of my silkies has become lethargic over the past few days. Not running for treats with the rest of the flock. Sitting alone and isolated.
I had a look at her today and noticed all the feathers around her vent are heavily matted with poo, there was a poo sticking out a little and her vent...
Wow, this site is always so informative. Thank you. I had no idea it was so under ventilated. I will sort that definitely as the Spring is coming. I don’t think hinging the gable section will work, but I can hinge a large section of the side I think.
Thank you all very much for your kind words and help. Thinking about it, when I moved them under cover I reduced their access to digging around for bugs etc. in the garden, so perhaps some protein might help. I’ve ordered some posher layers pellets and mealworms to help.
I’ve been using corn...
Hi all,
So I’m into my second year of ownership here in the UK, enduring Flockdown 22.
I thought I’d ask for a little advice. I know egg production is meant to fall dramatically in winter - shorter days and cold - but we haven’t had a single egg in 3+ months.
My flock is mostly bantams and...
Thank you. Yes, I guess she is molting. I didn’t know what it was until you mentioned it!! I’m no expert.
She is about 15 months old.
She shares a 24sqft coop and 100sqft run as part of a flock of 7 bantams. Although I am thinking about adding a couple of hybrids to up egg production, that...
Hi all,
For the international readers here in the UK we’re struggling with avian flu and need to keep our flocks under cover for the next few months.
I moved my free range flock inside their coop and run a couple of weeks ago (pictures attached) and one of the Pekins looks in a bad way.
My...
Thanks both for your thoughts, reassuring to know it should be strong enough. Door reinforcing a must.
I’ve been through smaller coops and I’ve decided I’d like a walk-in one. Easier to clean and care for the girls, and I’m slightly suspicious of how many chickens manufacturers like to claim...
