Update-
We ended up brooding our 6 chicks for a full 8 weeks inside. Our temps stayed too cold to safely move them, even though our coop has a heating plate mounted on the ceiling over the roost we could have turned on. (We just have it there on a thermostat to cycle on when temps drop below...
In the February HAL I had been asked to share the indoor fabric brooder modifications when they were done, and I figured folks on this side of hatching might be interested, so… Surprise! Unasked for pictures!
We still have some bitter temps, so are having to brood inside, something we don’t...
Ours had Barred Rock and Sapphire Gem last week, and the had Barred Rock and Production Reds this week. Our tcs will let you buy less than the 4 minimum oil you are filling in gaps with a brooder of new chicks at home that’s too small, otherwise it’s 4, whether you want them or not.
Okay, here are the chick portraits. Images were taken on my lovely chicken apron, and these gorgeous little birds each waited to poop until I moved them back to the brooder. Yay!

I just got done cleaning the brooder and taking portraits of them all. I’m just getting cleaned up and will post those better pictures in a little while.
Yay, egg 7!!! :celebrate
I hereby dub her/him Firn (yes, spelled with an ‘I’).
Firn is snow that has hung around and recrystallized into something quite strong and long lasting. It has a special kind of beauty. May this chick grow to be a strong, productive, and beautiful addition to your...
All 6 of the 6 that made it to lockdown hatched! The one Swedish Flower was not a sure thing. She clearly tore a blood vessel during hatching. The inside of the shell and all the feathers from throat to vent were smeared with blood. Her waste sac remained firmly attached to her through her...
We had some excitement here a few minutes ago. The second Hedamora hatched and was attached to her shell membrane by what appeared to be a blood vessel. It was very thin and translucent, but there was an extremely thin line of blood running down it. She kept struggling away from the shell and...
Day 21-
Woke up to one more that pipped between 2am and 6:30am. Then another pip at 7:30am. The one that pipped last night has pushed a bit further and there is now a 1.5cm crack below the pip.

I’ve got my first pip!!! It’s been totally silent, no noise at all. But, earlier today it really had looked like it wasn’t in the same position I had put it in at lock down, so I thought it might be active. I’m incredibly excited about the next 48 hours. Pipped here is Isbar #2 of 3. :wee
Woo hoo!
Brooder is almost ready. I am making some after-market modifications to a pop up brooder from Incubator Warehouse. We’re brooding at table level, so I’m adding drop down screened panels to two of the sides, so we don’t have to loom over the birds in order to handle them. It’ll be done...
Lockdown!
One of the Swedish Flowers turned out to have quit about day 12. I was having trouble getting my eyes adjusted to the dark on day 14, so I missed it.
Count at lockdown is 6/12.
