It’s all a bit temporary for now, I still have two more coops and a full surround run to make, I have given them some straw and a cardboard box with the base from the rabbit hutch on top for rain shelter, which is weighted down with a bucket of old nails from stripping out the wood from an old...
Do I need to introduce my younger chicks slowly when there isn’t a huge age difference?
I have two older chicks ~9-10 weeks who are outside, one is a bantam Wyandotte and the other is a legbar f/m respectively. I need them the share a coop with five silkies (not sexed) who are 5+ weeks old, I...
I have two coveys of 6month old quail, I want to combine them into one hutch with only one of the males. Each covey is 4females and one male, I want to put 6-7 females in with one male and put the non productive ones in the freezer. I then have young quail (4 weeks) coming on as growers to make...
I have tried, unfortunately where I am there are few options for chicks, I had some lined up for last week but the breeders incubator failed at day18. So she now has to wait until 6th March at the earliest.
Day time temp in the kitchen is 18-23’C / 64-73’f over night it drops to 14/57 c/f.
I...
Hi have a 3 week old solo hatched mini Wyandotte, I have just moved her to a bigger cage with mix of straw and sawdust and a towel, up to now she has had a heat plate in a smaller box.
My question is, is it too soon to remove the heat plate during the day? She is in front of the wood stove...
I have a lot of quail but this is my first chicken, I think there was an incubator problem which has left me with just one newly hatched Wyandotte.
She is obviously lonely, she is now 6 days old, we had a couple of times of pasty butt and she was back on her haunches for 3 days, but she has...
They can fight a little but usually settle, as I am sure you know they launch on any surface their little feet can reach. Took me a few times to get the knack of having the leg extend long enough to band!
Hi we are in northern italy, unfortunately I can’t build on the grass areas as we do have wolves so I need to keep the animals close to the house, the concrete/tarmac drives runs all the way round the house and is enclosed by a 5-6ft wall. Locally everyone’s chickens free range, but I am not...
I am about to start building a new coop for 5-8 chickens in the driveway, the build will be on tarmac/concrete. I want to build an integrated run and coop, which will be behind a fence, I also have rabbits and quail in self contained raised cages, which will also be behind the fence. I am in...
Likkie mats are great, even better when frozen, you can often find cheap silicon alternatives like dish drainers to use. My dogs love them even in the cold weather.
Hi, we keep and incubate quail as a food source for falcons, I have my first chicken eggs (mini wyandottes) in the incubator right now, first egg just pipped which is a relief as quail eggs are easier! We are from the UK but moved to northern Italy in 2020, just starting to expand our flocks.
I sometimes still find 8mm rings in the bottom of my cages, I only ring adults because earlier they just kinda go ‘ta daaa’ and the ring falls off, but it occasionally happens with the adults smh
