We have 2 3yo (maybe 4) hens left from a flock of 25 bought from McMurty's. These are the only 2 left, both black astrolorps. The others were carried off by a coyote while my untrained GPs watched... Anyway, one of them recently started crowing and mounting the other hen. She also lays very weak...
I have several friends who bought a small family milk cow to feed milk to their chickens. We've been feeding our small flock raw milk and milk products (yogurt, cottage cheese, spoiled milk, etc) and they pretty much live on that. They are fat and sassy and eat mostly what they forage besides...
I used to be a member a few years ago but couldn't find that old account. Happy to be back. We are wanting to raise quail, been raising chickens for a few years. We have two 4yo Astrolorps, they rarely lay but we like having them around :) Looking forward to learning more!
I'd like to raise quail for eggs but not necessarily for meat. We will probably harvest some but not all. How long do quail lay? How long do they live? Is this a crazy idea?
We raise layers currently and have raised and processed meat birds several times. Thank you!
