Ordered the blocks to redo my raised bed gardens this afternoon, having them delivered. I'm using my sick time payout I received at retirement to pay for them, a worthy investment!
What I have done so far:
Best wishes on the THR surgeries. I had one hip done, age 49. It made such a difference in my life, I could garden again. And don't ignore the precautions after surgery, you'll heal soon enough.
Just because...
Zaccheus and some of his girls.
Flock dynamics: 2 pullets (laying!) and cockerel (all are 6 months old) mingle with the other 4 hens, rooster, but then head to the back corner for some scratching and feeding.
(look at his spurs!)
In 2024 I allowed a broody to hatch five eggs. They all were cockerels.
This is from the night before they went to auction. I kept the little guy in the back.
He's all grown up.
And he's a great rooster.
Cleaned my shed yesterday, NOW I should be able to locate things.
Before
After!
I have a little more sorting to do, but it's wonderful to actually walk into the shed. And find stuff.
A friend gave me 18 free range chicken eggs she got from a neighbor. I used some of them for Christmas...
I had two dozen pullet eggs on hand, so I hard-boiled 15, ate two, and pickled the rest. Half went into a jar of pickled beets brine, the other half were submerged in soy sauce, as per a friend's recipe.
The wax paper is being used to keep the eggs submerged.
The kitty and chicken integration is not progressing as one would wish.
Sometimes Caleb looks at the cats but keeps walking, but he still does the impulsive launch.
Caleb will walk by the hoop coops without a sideways glance 8 out of 10 times, but then just has to do a short dash that upsets...
It was hit and miss with Baker Creek. Some lettuce sprouted fine, a different variety didn't germinate at all. Same issue with different varieties of Swiss chard, BUT the Zapallito squash sprouted well.
