For some reason I have been getting up at 4:30 every day. ugh. And what's my excuse? I didn't make it to a single swap this year. Miss you, Janet! All my showgirls are doing well, I got some nice babies this year. I still have that NN polish hen, she is a hoot!
I feel for you. we HAD a black bear do the same, except he ripped out a hunk of side wall in my barn. As in, 4 feet of my 34x36 barn (not some little coop). he was after chicken.....no doubt about it. We tried electric, we tried lights, we tried noise (I think the bear liked loud rock n roll!)...
I had rats kill a brood of Serama chicks last week. To say I was mad and sad, is an understatement. I even had them in a hanging cage, 4 feet above the floor. With the momma hen. But the rat pulled their little bodies through the bottom of the cage (1/2 in by 1/2in wire). I hate rats. I have...
Did you actually go to NHNANNA and talk to her about this? Instead of taking it to a public forum? I have bought chicks from her in the past, and have never known her to be anything but reputable. If this did happen to you, then obviously it was a mistake.
I have a showgirl hen that was broody for about 6 weeks. She got off the nest daily, but was never setting on eggs. Silly girl. Anyway, she finally gave up the nest, was running around with the rest of the flock and about 10 days ago she didn't come in at night. I went out and she was laying...
I have showgirls, and I NEVER get tired of looking at these pictures. That little guy is so cute. And, it is hard to tell, I wouldn't bet on either sex for another few months.
little chipmunks are partridge. With his (well, and the hens too) coloring, expect bleeding in the colors, especially around the hackles area. So cute! :)
Do you have a vet you could call? That happened to a serama roo I had, from a dog attack. I ddint want to splint it the wrong way, called the vet and they did it for me. yeah, so I had to pay$ but he was worth it.
In another month or so, I am going to be wanting 8-10 std. chickens (pullets, or hatching eggs). I want DARK BROWN eggs. I usually go with what the bird looks like, but I want dark eggs and dont care this go-round of hens. LOL. I know Marans lay chocolate dark ones, what else does? And do any of...
girls tuck their heads, the roos do not. thats why they are the only ones. And except for the vaseline, there really is nothing you can do (oter than heat or insulate). unless you are showing them, then it wont matter if they lose their points. come springtime, you wont even notice.
Collecting them. ANd yep, they ARE fertilized. She is in with another pullet (not laying yet) and and the tiniest silkied cockerel. Oh my Lord are they cute. Every one of the eggs I checked, had a little bullseye. I guess I should have put them in the bator. I didnt, as I dont want housechickens...
