Here are pictures of Clover, my current head rooster. I've narrowed down my keeper roosters for the breeding pen and right now he is at the top of the list. First male to hatch, grew and matured the fastest, crowed the earliest (I think week 11!), friendliest, and most respectful of the hens AND...

A few SFH pics of 17 week olds (wow, has that much time gone by already? They were cute little fluffballs not that long ago!). Out of 9 hatched I have 5 roosters. ACK! I am rehoming two that I call "the Brothers" to a good home that has a bunch of hens but that just got rid of a mean rooster who...

    Maticoopx 20 Egg Incubator

For the first time in a long time I wanted to hatch chicken eggs this spring. Which meant buying a new incubator. I thought I would share my thoughts. After a lot of research I settled on the Maticoopx 20 Egg Incubator to use for hatching chicken eggs from a very rare breed. I chose to get 2...

Looking for advice to give this chick a chance :)

Everyone has to make their own decision of when, or if, to help. Personally, I help if it's obvious they are struggling and perhaps dying. Yes, they may have a "failure to thrive" issue and die anyway. Or I might have to put one down that is deformed or suffering. But for me? Hey, they had a...

She can't be laying right? She's 9 years old and already stopped at 7 years old

Oh yes, it can happen! We had a Buff Orpington that stopped laying for years. We got a new batch of chicks and not long after integrating them in with her during their teen years she suddenly started laying again. My theory was that all the estrogen in the air triggered her to lay again. :D

The hatching eggs came from two places, one dozen each: Tim Oliver and Em Ily. Billie Tulio is from Tim Oliver. Out of those 2 dozen 9 hatched, 4 from Time Oliver and 5 from Em Ily. Both packed their eggs really nicely and included extra eggs. This was my first time hatching shipped eggs. Next...

Definitely! I have 8 hatchery chicks in a nearby brooder, and the difference is night and day. The Swedish Flower Hens are braver, more curious, less flighty, and settle in for cuddles much faster.

    Too Late for Marek's Vaccine?

The intention was to vaccinate my chicks as soon as they hatched. However, I only now got the vaccine in the mail (the shipping was delayed) and the chicks are between 19 and 23 days old. They have not been around any of the adult chickens. It is too late for these 9 chicks?

Here is a new picture of Billie Tulio, the first to hatch which is pictured here. Billie already had the little lighter tips of the feathers that the Swedish Flower Hens are known for. And he/she has a cute little crest of feathers! It's amazing how fast they grow.
