    making a dust bath

We built one from a stacking basket ( little bigger than a kitty litter box, had ventilation holes in three sides and opens in front, but has a lip a few inches high. They were on sale when kids were going off to college) drilled holes in a lid for a storage tub and zip tied the top to the...

    Dominique Thread!

I got my doms from a breeder in Ohio who is probably a few hours away from you. I am south of Pittsburgh, and have some babies who hatched memorial day weekend, I think 2 are boys, if that might be helpful?

What breed will you never have again? Me? It's...

Our Dominiques are great, friendly and easy to handle even though we got them as adults. The buff orpington, on the other hand, we got as a tiny ball of fluff, spent time under a heat lamp in our living room, was handled by a kid every day, fed tons of treats, and is flighty, fearful, hard to...

    What chicken do I get!?

I have two dominiques and one buff orpington. Interesting that so many describe the orpingtons as friendly, mine is flightier and less friendly than the dominiques. The dominiques are easy to handle and pick up, and always underfoot, while the orpington stays just out of reach and is jumpier...

    Gynandromorph Chicken

Once upon a time, I had a chicken that looked like a rooster but never crowed and the other chickens treated it like a hen ( the roosters bred it ). I found it dead in the coop when it was maybe 9 months old, for no obvious reason, it was just laying in the corner. At the time I was thinking...

Preparing for a Show Months in advance

I've only shown once, so don't actually have a clue, but I was advised that good husbandry was the most important thing, that if I took good care of them they would be at their best, vague, but when we got to the show I thought my buff orpingtons from craigslist were poor (hatchery) quality but...

    pullorum, dumb question about

Mine were tested before the fair for pullorum, typhoid, and avaian flu. It was a blood draw under the wing, they dried a drop of blood on the spot for the pullorum test, but the avian influenza was sent out and I got results back from the state a week or two later. ( all their results were fine)...

    dominque crosses

I had a flock of show stock dominiques that were good free range birds. They were very good at staying away from predators, one time my dogs got loose ( boston terriers, not especially good hunters and were completely ineffective at catching the chickens, didn't get so much as a feather.

    coop design?

I have an electric poultry fence, so they are outside during the day. I am in Pennsylvania so the winters aren't usually real bitter, but there are going to be times when they won't want to be out. ( last feb, for example). Most of the coops I have seen are squarish, and I wondered if it was...

    coop design?

How do chickens use space inside the coop? I need to build one and want them to have enough space on winter days when they can't get out. I know dogs get more use from a long narow run than a square because they trot end to end. Do chickens also, or would a long narrow coop let a dominant hen...
