    Injured Bird, Possibly Also Sick

Thanks for the response! My bully is a buff Orpington and my bullied gal is an Easter egger. I’ve got them both isolated from the flock right now, although I’ve seen some things that say that the bullied hen should be isolated within the coop… how does that work when it’s wintertime? She’ll be...

    Injured Bird, Possibly Also Sick

Yeah, she has kind of always sat like this sometimes but now it seems worse and all the time. There is another bird getting bullied too who doesn’t seem to have any other issues, and the bullying is just happening via one bully hen (who I am also going to isolate from the flock for a few days)...

    Injured Bird, Possibly Also Sick

So I have a hen who has two separate issues. The first is that she is being bullied in the flock (I have isolated her to treat her injury). The second is that she has always had sort of weird behavior regarding her legs. She has always walked a little differently and done a lot of...

    Wet Chickens In The Winter

They were like ruffling their feathers a bit. I'd say moderately wet. But it's not getting below 42 tonight and that's what the temperature was when they chose to stand in the rain

    Wet Chickens In The Winter

Hey there. Today my chickens willingly stood out in the rain (they had dry options) and got pretty wet. The weather is in the low 40s and not meant to drop below that until tomorrow night. Is it okay to let them roost outside wet or do I need to bring them in/dry them off??

When can I collect the first eggs?

They are mostly in a run attached to their coop but sometimes they are allowed to free range in the backyard

When can I collect the first eggs?

But in the meantime, can I collect the eggs that they have laid? Currently there are 3 in one nesting box.

When can I collect the first eggs?

My chickens have just begun to lay their first pullet eggs and I am very excited to collect them! However, I’ve heard that if you take the first egg, they will never lay in that spot again and they’re currently laying right where I want them to. How long should I wait and when I do begin...

    Adding new pullets

Thank you so much! This was all very helpful, I think I’ll definitely wait until next year if I do choose to add to the flock

    Adding new pullets

Hi, thanks for responding! I’m in a fairly warm but full seasons climate, hesitant to post location as chickens are not yet legal here. This is my first flock. The desire to add two more chickens is for additional eggs. Also I’d like to learn how to grow a flock, as having chickens is...

    Adding new pullets

Thanks! Unfortunately I’ve got to butcher the rooster, I live in a city and he crows nonstop for hours starting at 4:30am. Can’t do that to the neighbors.

    Adding new pullets

So I currently have a flock of 6 chickens (5 pullets, 1 roo) that are 15 weeks old. I’d like to add two more pullets to the mix but I’m wondering if the flock integration is going to be more of a hassle than it’s worth? I feel like I’ve heard horror stories of chickens getting so beat up when...

    Sand, woodchips, topsoil, oh my!

Perhaps, but it’ll be better that they reach the wire instead of a bunch of broken glass, metal, and concrete. Backyard was literally a junkyard full of dangerous trash and poison ivy. Had to sheet mulch the whole thing.

    Sand, woodchips, topsoil, oh my!

Oh, this makes sense. I’ll just add a bunch of woods chips, thank you!

    Sand, woodchips, topsoil, oh my!

The run is already fully constructed, can’t take the hardware cloth away now or add a skirt of it. When I bought the house, the backyard was basically a junkyard. Full of tiny pieces of broken glass, cement crumbles, old soda cans, etc. Even if I could have managed to remove all the trash, much...

    Sand, woodchips, topsoil, oh my!

Note: I already have a barrier constructed to hold in whatever material I fill in the run with.

    Sand, woodchips, topsoil, oh my!

So I am keeping chickens in the city and recently moved them into their coop and run outside. To ensure that they weren’t scratching in contaminated soil, I covered the ground with several inches of woodchips, and then built the run on top of that. I placed poultry mesh below to ensure that...
