Any advice on cleaning in sub-freezing weather?
Usually I clean thoroughly once a week, rinsing everything, cleaning with water and vinegar, re-rinsing, and letting dry, including perch bars, tray under the perches, nesting boxes, ramp up to the coop, and food and water bowls.
First, will...
I personally am not a fan! :D
The toad was once again hiding in the bottom of a nesting box back shortly after I posted. He got scooped up with the poop cleaning shovel and is now far away. He hasn't been back.
This one was a darker, muddy color. I wouldn't have called it terribly large but not really small, either. I didn't see its toes. I was 'cleaning up poop' when a 'large bunch of poop' suddenly moved under my hand!
I'll have to figure out a way to trap it or catch it in something. :(
Forgive me if this is common knowledge among chicken owners. I've never owned chickens before May.
This morning I found a frog or toad in the chickens' nesting box. I chased him away. This afternoon, he was right back there, making himself at home in the other nesting box. Is his presence going...

Dropping in to say hello. We've had our chickens for about three weeks now and I'm looking ahead to having to run across the yard in 3 feet of snow, 2 or 3 times a day, next winter to take care of them!
We have 4 Rhode Island Reds, about 6 months old. Only one of them seems to be laying so far.
Thank you! I make videos showing how we do some of our projects and try to match the background music to the theme. Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals has a movement about chickens!
Indeed I do! Jumping past the long story on that.... I never expected to have such a large family OR chickens or a hobby farm, yet here I am loving it and feeling it's just as life should be!
