Had to replace one of my hens, that turned out to be a Roo instead.
I was given this hen from kinfolk to replace him, but I'd like to know what I have. Ameraucana? Easter Egger?
Doesn't really matter to me, as long as she's a decent layer, but my curiosity is up.
What is she?
Good point.
That cooler you see, is in front of a large door for the run. I could set the dog crate, inside the run. That way it also has the protection of the hardware cloth surrounding the run.
Thanks!
I haven't even thought about putting my current hen, in the dog crate!
Right now, I'm leaning towards just getting one more, instead of two. I don't want them to be so crowded it's uncomfortable for them.
At this point, my inclination is to get one more, put them together late in the...
I bought two pullets, and one turned out to be a Rooster!
I have successfully managed to re-home the rooster, and he now has 6 lady friends. I'm sure he's happy!
My questions concerns my replacement hen, or hens.
First question, my coop floor is 3'x4', and my run is 4'x9', not counting the...
I need to re-home a Rhode Island Red Rooster. Covington/Newton county area.
I only have room for two chickens, and of course a hen/roo ratio of one to one, just won't work!
No rehoming fee, free, and if you're in Newton County, I'll bring him to you. I have no problem if you're wanting him...
What worked for me was a combination of two things. Improving the ventilation of the coop, and putting an LED light inside on a timer. The light comes on around 6:00 and goes off around 9:30. The day I installed the light, is the day they started sleeping inside.
I’m pretty sure. This picture is a month old, and she’s the one closest to us. Not where I can go take a pic right this minute. ( The pics of the roo earlier in the post were made today). She’s still smaller, and doesn’t have near the comb and wattles as the roo. I do think she’s a she.
Ahh…. Maybe she was, and I read it the wrong way.
Guy I bought from really was a nice guy, and spent time with me, knowing I was a first timer. I don’t believe he did it on purpose, however I’ll find my replacement somewhere else. 😊
Care to expound on your statement?
I don’t quite see what makes me a terrible person because I only have room for two, and want them both to be hens.
I thought finding him a home where someone has more room, who actually wants a rooster would be the right thing to do.
What would be your...
I'm pretty new to chickens. Bought two hens from a very nice gentleman, who told me that he only had hens, no roosters in his flock. I'm beginning to doubt that fact.
I bought them back in the middle of June, and was told they were 10-12 weeks old at that time. The other one, when I got...
Yes they are. I think ventilation was a factor, but the main thing was the light I put inside the coop. It’s on a timer to come on before dusk and go off around 9:30. One night I thought they would be used to the coop by now so I unplugged the light. They slept outside on the roost in the run...
Stop it! LOL
I do have plans for a shutter that can be let down to cover the window, I just don't have that part built yet. The coop is pretty well protected from wind by virtue of it being in the edge of the woods, with about 20 acres of trees behind it. It's also on the side of a hill, so...
I think we did it!!
After I cut the window this morning, and removed the food, water, and roost from the run, they've spent most of the day so far, inside the coop. With the small fan in the coop, they may be cooler in there, than they are outside. Gonna leave it this way for a few days, and...
Ok...so I added a window this morning. Cut a 15x18 hole in the door, and covered it with 1/4" hardware cloth. I have an led light bulb inside, which is now on a timer to come on at 6:00 and go off around 9:30. I still have the fairy lights inside, so when the led light goes off, they still...
