Don't worry about making it chick proof - just make it hen proof.. Until they get a lot older, the chicks wont stray far from moma.

OMG- My first ever broody hen!!!

Peepers Natural! My year old broody hen hatched her first clutch last Fri and Sat. I got 5 out of 7 eggs to hatch. Of the other 2, one was never fertilized and the other appeared to have been dead for at least a week. The 5 peepers are all doing good - its pretty darn warm during the day, but...

Free ranging - food and water placement?

Quote: I'll second this. My flock ranges in 6 acres of pasture and they'll range around for a while, then periodically come back to the coop/run/barn area to rest in the shade and get a drink. Just prop open the run door and let them come and go as they want - they'll be fine.

I've even got a small bucket heater to put in it to keep it ice free over the winter. The only problem is that the handles are meant to carry the weight of 5 gallons of water...

Are rhode island reds family friendly?

I bought my 10 RIR hens from a local breeder when they were about 12 weeks old, so they weren't hand raised peepers. Now at 10 months old they all come running from the pasture when they see anyone near their coop - we always toss them some scratch or kitchen greens when we collect eggs so they...

    Fire ants and chickens ???

My 10 Rhode Island Red Hens did a good job wiping out a couple of fire and mounds near their pen. I let them free range around my pasture and they spent a couple months over the winter scratching at and eating the fire ants until the colonies decided to move on. Keep in mind, over the winter...
