    New chicks are here!

After working at it for about 2 months, I've finally got Ricky trained to round up his girls and move them into the run when I sing this song:

    How to help a runt?

Some extra b vitamins in the form of nutritional yeast might help. I had one with my last batch that was a little on the small side. I mixed it with a little scrambled egg for a few days and she caught up with the others pretty quickly.

How to keep my hens cool in the hot summer

All great ideas! I cut up the watermelon and freeze it and share with the chickies but I can't part with the rind, it makes the best pickles!!! :thumbsup

My 4 mature 18-month old hens are not laying consistently. Could it be the feed or heat?

My older (3 yo now) chickens sometimes drop off laying some when we get this hot weather and sometimes if they don't get enough outside run around time because of predators. I've had a persistent hawk that won't move on and she almost got one of my girls the other day even though I was close by...

I think i need some direction, please

I started with a curtain to encourage them to feel safe in the space but once they've gotten used to laying there you don't really need it. My older chickens never had a curtain, just an open crate with some bedding in it. However some nervous chickens really like the privacy. Depends on the...

    Lawn fertilizer

If you can see the pellets so can they and they will likely try to eat them. I personally wouldn't take the chance. I'm not sure of the effect it would have but I suspect ingesting chemicals like that wouldn't be good. Maybe give them some more things to do to keep them busy in their run if they...

    Foraging and Pest(fly) management

I had problems with flies in a new coop/run I finished this year. I got first saturday lime (not regular garden lime - this is different) and between that and a sticky fly paper roll hung up where it can't fall and the chickens can't get to it) that seems to have solved the problem.

Roo or Hen - 4 day old Barred Rocks

I'd like to amend that, chick one could be female. I had a look at my 1 week pictures of my female barred rock and she didn't look that different from yours

Roo or Hen - 4 day old Barred Rocks

Males usually have a larger white spot while females it's smaller but that's not always 100%. That said, I'd keep a close eye on chick in the 1st picture. I suspect that may be a male, not sure about 2 but I'm leaning toward female, 3 and 4 look female.

    RIR Rooster?

RIR roosters get huge combs and wattles. That's a hen for sure. Mine didn't start laying till about 24 to 26 weeks old but some start sooner.
