Injury from rooster mating aggressive with EE's.

One thing I've noticed with Hen Healer is they absolutely focus on the blue color and pick at it immediately. Only difference I could see with this vs. Blu-Kote is the Hen Healer states there is no need for egg withdrawal, which is odd wording. Does that mean the eggs are still consumable...

Injury from rooster mating aggressive with EE's.

I wondered about this when I saw it on the shelf. Wonder why they don't just market it for both and save on the packaging?

Injury from rooster mating aggressive with EE's.

Ended up with two birds with small spots on their back just before the tail that were pecked, but they had scabbed over well and I had applied Hen-Healer to both. Was a result of both rooster injury and then birds focusing on it, especially when I had penned them up to save them from the cold...

First winter storm & lessons learned

I can say this in the aftermath... This storm was unique across a very large area of the country. On my job I have been doing for over 20 years as a telecom tech, we have found equipment enclosures completely packed with fine snow from this storm. I really don't think the coop needs a...

    Sick, vomiting hen

How did this turn out? The end results are the most useful to those seeking knowledge. Hopefully she is still among your flock and doing well.

First winter storm & lessons learned

Been rethinking how to handle winter going forward. I can block off the east and west louvered vents (and long lower louvered one on the front from the inside). I am thinking about adding a detachable deflector with east/west louvered direction cuts that will angle in under the north facing...

First winter storm & lessons learned

Learned nothing may stop snow getting into the coop in weather like this. It's not been a fun weekend. We ended up with 14 birds in 4 big dog crates in our basement through the worst of it, after having added another bag of bedding in the coop the day before the storm was coming. I kept an...

Injury from rooster mating aggressive with EE's.

The Hen Healer is bright blue in color... I guess the same as Blu-Kote. All they had available in the Blu-kote line was equine. I will post some pics as soon as I get home tomorrow. Wife and daughter are going to tend to her needs with water and food during the day until we decide the best...

Injury from rooster mating aggressive with EE's.

Recently the rooster, which will be culled tomorrow night, has started getting way too aggressive with the Easter Eggers when mating (and more aggressive in general with us as well). All the EE's are getting hurt in the same spot in the middle of the back just before the tail. One to the point...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

I've seen this both in beekeeping with storms in the spring to fall seasons and now chickens. It's amazing. No weather forecaster can out do the animals.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Of all the different breeds in our flock... you are not wrong in your assumption. Same situation. I have one that always crowds the same RIR and they lay eggs together (kind of cute in one aspect, but sometimes ends in cracked egg shells), and another that just lays in the corner of the coop...

    Feeding DuMor Organic

I know this is an older thread, but I'm going to stick with the same brand we started off with "Nature's Best" (Kreamer Feed). I ordered a couple of bags of All Flock and started thinking about this since it's not regularly being bought at the store, so a little research brought me to this...

Things you wish you could say

On my job more times than you can imagine: Me: Found the problem, it's fixed, and you're good to go! Them: Everything seems to be working great now. pause... Them: So it's fixed then? What I'd like to say: "Sort of... it'll probably work for a day and burst into flames."

Just saw the original thread and jumped to the last page... This one derailed and the locomotive is all terrain capable.🤪

How to get your hens to eat oyster shells

We're going to try this next. Our egg shells for the most part are strong except for the ones from our RIR's. Sometimes they can break just carrying them once in a while and they all eat very little of the Manna Pro oyster shell (and coral) we put out for them. As soon as we collect enough...

Made a tool for cleaning the run

Wanted a tool for scooping up waste in the run without wasting the construction sand from the main section or the dirt under the coop they use as a dust bath. Had some nets laying around but even 1/4" sized netting still pulled out too much of the pebbles in the construction sand and a lot of...

Help with boys or girls ..

My experience with the Australorps is you are correct in your assumption. You should probably start hearing the ones with comb and wattles crowing any day now, or trying to. The other one looks like a pullet to me. I don't remember our RIR's having any comb or wattles starting at this point...

    diatomaceous earth

Just from what I saw... it cakes with very little moisture, and even when conditions dried, it stayed caked hard on some surfaces, so I can see how this would be cumulative in the lungs. I just dumped that dirt I removed from under the coop around some of our blueberry plants. To each his...
