first time raising chicks and honestly petrified i have done something to hurt my babies! it’s been a week and what was supposed to be a dozen sweet chickies is now half a dozen!
day old chicks were shipped while it was fairly cold, spent 3 days in the mail.
two were DOA, two looked extremely...
she’s been just fine it seems! she laid an egg with no shell and then a very soft squishy egg but has since not laid anything. she eats, drinks, and runs over for treats at snack time so i’m just thrilled.
thank you for asking and thank you to everyone for all the hopeful posts! i’m so glad i decided to give her a chance. i’ve been giving her extra calcium that i make into a slurry and dose orally followed by liquid penicillin (it’s what i had access to) and she’s been her normal happy self! she...
thank you for your input! i had intended to cull yesterday but she was so bright that i couldn’t bring myself to do it. glad i’m seeing this post before it was too late, i’ll absolutely try the antibiotics and extra calcium.
i’ll be sure to pay extra close attention to my flock now as i have another 5 year old brown and a buff orp who is 3-4. looks like i got my young stock at just the right time as my older girls days are likely more numbered than i originally thought.
thank you for the reassurance about the treats.
thank you for that tip. my biggest thought behind feeding treats, especially the veggies, was that they needed extra beyond the complete feed. i was, unfortunately, thinking about feeding them in the same way i’d feed my horses.
thank you for the input and resources! i have decided to cull her so she no longer has to suffer.
as far as her weight and the weights on the rest of the flock, they’re all right around 5-6 pounds save for the roo who is closer to 7. i handle them all regularly so that when there’s an emergency...
thank you for your input! i do my best to always wash my hands after doing anything with the birds, so hopefully i’ll be all right. do you have any resources you’d recommend i read about salpingitis? i’m quite worried about the rest of my flock now.
than
thank you for your input! to the best of your knowledge if i were to let her live on what is the likelihood one of my other birds will get sick? i have a few geriatrics in the flock.
she does not appear to be bloated, i even palpated her all over and she seems completely normal. no noticeable change in weight, nothing feels squishy or off to me. though i am admittedly still very new at chicken keeping so i could absolutely be missing something.
thank you for your input! salpingitis was my biggest concern. i’ve read that once the hen has passed a lash egg it is unlikely they will respond to antibiotics. while i do have easy access to antibiotics i wonder if it would be more humane to cull given her age.
hello all, i am looking for guidance as to what (if anything) is wrong with my old isa brown girl. she’s laid a very strange egg after weeks of no laying. i assumed she was just finished and nearing EOL but then i found this! listed below is all info i think will be helpful:
- she’s 5 years...
