My thoughts on construction sand - a couple of months in.
Pros:
- It keeps my coop cleaner day to day than anything else I have tried so far.
-Cleaning currently every other day takes about 5-8 minutes or less.
-The abrasive nature of sand does seem to deter all bugs except flies of course...
I upgraded the chicks to the larger feeder and waterer today and spent some time watching them adjust, which means I have some photos to share!
First up the Bantam Cochins - Maple, Elma, and Oakley are all thriving they are bright and super curious about everything. Their super feather feet...
Omg they are so cute!!!! I love the breeds you got. I looked up the GCM’s she will be gorgeous, I had never seen that variety before. For having to do this fast 💨 you sure ended up with some amazing chicks!
I have had several very young chicks and I would say the poop is in range of normal, I wouldn’t be concerned unless it was coupled with lethargy and since she seems bright and energetic otherwise I really do think your fine to just monitor.
I will pass on a quote that my pediatrician gave me...
I cant really split them full time, at least not this year. I will have to reevaluate around spring time. I still have the old coop so I could just separate them for 2 weeks grab some eggs to set and then put them back together. I think that could work.
I appreciate this, filing it may well
become necessary. Fortunately it seems to be pretty minor and he is eating just fine. I will let the breeder know for sure. I never intended to hatch any chicks from him. I only intended to hatch SFH eggs going forward.
That said no doubt he could manage...
Thyme eye me because Juniper decided to jump up in my lap. He was definitely making sure I didn't let her come to any harm. 😆
Another Roo of a different kind ut appears ve has slight crossbeak.i never noticed till the other day.
They are SO Fluffy! Nyx seems to showing us how fabulous she is...
I think they were born like this, they seem to me to be a breed called Sphynx cat, though their are a few other naked cat breeds, so I could well be mistaken.
Cat tax
I’ll admit that my gut reaction to these sweet babies is not 100% favorable but I think it’s only because my brain says something is amiss and I wanna help 🤣 but of course these 2 are in perfect health and uniquely beautiful.
What a fascinating breed.
I think if you breed a barred roo to an all black hen you get all barred chicks. If you reverse that with a black roo and a barred hen you get a 50/50 split with all barred chicks being boys.
This is fun to play with:
