Interesting. I wasn’t sure I believed that the eggs dropped through the screen under the beetle drawer. You’re saying that in your experience, this works?! Please say YES!!!
I have some beetles and some pupae and still a lot of live mealworms. I don’t think I’ve hatched any new mealworms yet, although, TBH, I haven’t paid close attention. I would think that I have to have hatched some, given that I started this November 23, 2022, don’t you think? That’s about three...
I checked my colony yesterday. Most of my mealworms were still alive. About 6 dead. I saw several shedded exoskeletons, but I didn’t see any pupa. Did I not look hard enough?
I’m new to chickens.
I have three, nine-month-old silkies. Yesterday while washing/trimming nails/general health check I noticed some white in their otherwise black skin. Is this the beginning of scale?
I’m not sure if this is normal, or something to be concerned about.
Thanks!
I’ve made my drawer system ands have ordered my starter mealworms (500).
I happened to have an excess of cornmeal, so I hoped to use that as substrate, moving to the bran once the cornmeal is gone. Will this be an ok substrate to start with? I’ve heat-treated the cornmeal.
Wow! New to backyard chickens. They love meal worms! I can see my new project starting! Searching the house today for a few old bins and a screen.
Can these be kept outside? I live along the California coast. It doesn’t freeze, but can get chilly.
How long do the beetles live? Do you try...
I don’t feel so inept, now. Thanks fi yes the affirmation! I wonder if I should’ve forced them to perch-sleep when they were chicks. They didn’t like the perch when they were chicks, so I didn’t force it.
I did floor level perch. Last night at bedtime I had to pull them out of the chicken pile...
I have tried to train my silkies to perch themselves, and still they pile. It’s a cute pile, but a pile nonetheless.
My three silkies are five months. They have not started laying, yet.
I have been putting them up on a perch every night for four months. They stay all night and some mornings...
