I have 2 roosters with 15 hens(I know, I am adding more hens this spring)
The top roo is older by about a year and is a big boy. My other roo is not even 1 year old and not a big breed at all.
Last night I came home to a bloody coop and bloody boys.
I have 2 small coops that house each...
I thought it was feather picking but down the rabbit hole of chickens makes me think feather mites or mange. I have not see over preening or even feather picking but I'm not with them 100% of the time.
I have 1 hen that her tail feathers are looking really raggedy.
I have been switching...
Well I didn't keep any of them! I kept mister green and then I gave that flock of Rhode islands reds to a friend. I kept 4 hens without a rooster and I enjoyed that. I brought on some Swedish flower hens that I ended up have 4 boys. I rehomed one cuz our energies were not voting and I have the...
I'm not sure how many times I've read that article and I still feel like I'm going to miss it if my chickens have lice or mites. Ahhhhh. Lol.
Thank you for the reply.
I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Lice or sand. I feel so dumb for not knowing what lice looks like. I've had a nagging feeling about lice in my flock so I did a PSP spray (not sure if I did it good enough though)
Pics below is close to her oil gland are of her body.
I'm not worried about mating or the eggs :) I know its all natural. What I don't want is any cockerell chasing the hens to get what he wants. I'm not going to get a mature rooster for quite some time with these young boys I have. I want the best guy out of this bunch and for me to oversee...
I have 4 hens right at being a year old and then 4 pullets and 4 cockerells that are 3 months old.
They have been free ranging together for almost 2 months.
1 cockerell is maturing more quickly than I am ready for. He has successfully mounted my older hens. My head hen! I was so mad as...
I have a 7 month old laying hen with a distented abdominal. Feels squishy and noticeably distended. She is eating, drinking, and active. Her laying has slowed over the last week.
How can I be for sure it is water belly vs an infection?
When should I plan to drain? I would prefer not to...
Her vent has never really been normal, more like an outie vs an innie:)
Vet did not say if it was reproductive or not but I also didn't ask either.
The nodule seems to have reduced in size but not much
I have a hen (born 5/2022, started laying 10/2022) that is currently on amoxicillin and a steroid cream for her vent. She has a nodule on the vent and is swollen, took her to the vet ND he said she has an abdominal infection that could be causing the nodules.
It's been a out a week of meds...
Do I have enough ventilation. Or should I add some more?? I covered up the front and added pine shavings to close up the floor. So on 2 sides its is open at the top corner.
Located in North Mississippi. We will have a drop in overnight temps to 8 degrees. Attached is my current mobile coop setup with an open floor.
My plan is the close up the bottom with plastic sheeting and put in pine shavings, lower the roosting bars by just a bit and line the coop with some...
Thank you. Her vent has never been normal and or digestive tract. :(
She gets fermented feed along with coconut oil on the regular and free choice grit and oyster shells. I will pick up a calcium tablet to have on hand for her as well.
Got it! I knew that was going to be the answer. It just seems so dang cold for how tiny they are and having an open bottom coop just makes me second guess their feathers. :)
I am building a smaller version of the attached pic of a chickshaw for my younger 6 chick's that are about 2.5 months old. I am in North Mississippi, we don't get super super cold but we will be in the 20's this week. I worry that temp is a bit cold at night for them.
To insulate or not...
My pullet laid her first egg today. Back story with her since she was about 2 months old she has never had a normal cloaca/vent. She has a hard time passing stool sometimes snd then it inflames the cloaca. I've noticed it had been more swollen the last couple of days so I was anticipating her...
