My girl Penance is just under 2 months old (bought her at the end of April). This is my first time raising a Salmon Faverolle and I know they look a bit goofy but I can't tell if her nostrils are supposed to look like this or not. I feel like her nostrils are inflamed.
She does have a mild case...
Thank you! The photo is very helpful. I'll make sure to get that made before next winter.
Me and the girls are enjoying some freshly recovered ground today
It's my first year with the girls (we have 3 cochins. They turn 1 at the end of April). 2 of them went broody this winter. One in February and one in March. Luckily we broke it for both.
We have 2 heat lamps in the run on really cold days. One red and one white light. But that's good to know...
Ooooo. That's a very good point. We were close to just cutting a hole in the top.
It sounds like it might be important for me to look into a different water solution next year :/
Thanks for the tip. I live in Minnesota though, so heated water feels like the best answer. It's mostly dirt under the water, but I'll make sure to keep it more clear of straw.
What do you use instead of heat to keep it from freezing?
Hmmm, good to know. I'll have to keep an eye out for that. We have the waterer and the cord elevated because they kicked sand and straw into it otherwise
We have this water container for our 3 girls. It works well to keep the water from freezing (a big concern in Minnesota) but I hate that I have to fill it from the bottom and flip it over. Any suggestions on how to modify it?
It's my first winter keeping my girls. They seem to be holding up quite well. Soap (the lavender cochin) doesn't mind the snow but Oedipus (the blue cochin) and Distortion (the partridge cochin in the back) are very offended by it. They love to sit up on their little tree branch and complain...
Yeah, I bought her from my local farm store. They weren't super clear about which bin of chicks was which other than, these are for sure Cochins (their feathery pants and toes are so cute).
That's good though that it looks genetic. She and her sisters are active, eating and drinking well, and...
My chicken, Soap, is a giant blue cochin. She's 16 weeks old and her feathers look scruffier compared the other two (also 16 weeks old). She dust bathes and preens so I'm wondering if this is genetic. She doesn't seem ill at all.
Here's my 3 girls. From left to right: Distortion (Tori), Soap, and Oedipus Rebecca The First Mother Clucker (Oedi, pronounced like Eddy). And here's a picture of Oedi on the hammock with me.
