ISO of hens in the Pacific NW Area (MT, WY, ID, WA, ND). Almost all of my hens got killed by a raccoon who dug up my no dig fence. The racoon is no longer around............, and the coop is now adjusted to keep even the smartest of predators out.
Alright! We have a blue/teal egg layer in the coop, and it could only be her. Her earlobe has the same hue, and all the eggs she's laid so far have been this size and color. Pretty big eggs compared to my BR hens. PBB is my final guess due to size of egg, color, behavior, feathering, etc. Woohoo!!
Double barring on a Barred rock chicken only happens to roosters. This BR is 110% rooster. Their combs and wattles are way way way too big and red for 10 weeks.
If you raise a barn kitten around the chickens, that might be best bet. We have multiple barn cats, and we store feed by the cats food bowl. You can best the mice will be drawn out, and killed. They decimated our mice/rodent population .
Both roos. You can tell because of the feet color, especially the combs and wattles (my pullets aren't even this big or red at 21 weeks), pointy and curving tail feathers, and the BR roo has double barring (whiter more apparent barring). My BR pullets are much darker in barring.
Here are my pullets at 6-7 weeks. They are confirmed BR. They are now 20 weeks and some have started laying. They all matured very differently age wise, and combs looked different each week pullet to pullet.
My vote is pullet. I have 4 barred rock, some mature quicker than others. At 7 weeks about half of them looked like this. They are now 20 weeks and laying eggs. I have back up pictures if you'd like.
I agree! All other 6 pullets let me pick them up and pet them pretty much any time of day. Crazy pants just doesn't seem to trust me, and I am not sure she ever will. I have learned a tactic that let's me catch her more easily. The problem is once I catch her.
Wow that's truly awesome! Glad to know she is not a loner. Their stance cracks me up especially when running/half flying and darting as fast as physically possible. Very different from my Black Cochin's waddle.
She is very curious of me and seems to understand I am a provider/protector, as long...
So here are the better photos. She is crazy pants. The only chicken I have that is even half this wild. When I hold her she screams bloody murder.
Her feet look more yellow/pink to me. I have BR pullets and their feet are definitely yellow.
Pea comb.
As far as the ear, I don't believe a...
I live in Southwest Montana. Winters here are mostly dry snow, but very cold. Almost every day is below 30 degrees, and we go weeks at a time under 0 degrees, sometimes days in a row between 0 to -20 degrees.
Do you have any tips for this harsh of a cold?
-Food supplementation (black...
I personally don't use anything. This is partially to me waiting to see what would make the most sense. I live in a pretty dry climate. The poop dries almost instantly. I wait until the poop builds up, and use a drywall scraper to remove. I barely put any effort into scraping. The plywood I use...
