I will do these suggestions and get back to you. Thanks a lot !
She's around 2 now. No weight loss although I have noticed fewer eggs in general lately.
Hi.
One of my chickens has a severely dirty 'butt', just under the vent area.
It's thick and a mustard colour.
She also is acting a little strange and this morning didn't go after the treat seed a chucked in for girls and just stood there looking at me .
Any help would be appreciated.
Hi, She was 2 years old.
I don't know when she had last laid to be honest as there are similar egg colours amongst my flock.
By the time I found her she had sadly had started to develop maggots so no necropsy could be done & I wouldn't know where to start anyway.
Hi both, thanks for replying.
The bald patch is something all my chickens have as they peck at each other whilst they are dust bathing for some reason.
Tried all sorts to stop it, to no avail.
The was no wound visible.
Just one of those things I guess.
Hi.
Would anyone be able to hazard a guess as to why my chicken died based off the picture please ?
I know there could be a million reasons but it came as a shock as she was healthy (seemingly) the day before.
I checked body and there was no injuries or egg bound.
Thank you
Hi all,
I'm in desperate help for some answers to this thread as lately the problem has escalated. I have since built an extension however their coop is already quite large - whilst not free range they all have plenty of room.
I have sprayed anti peck but to no avail.
Even when they have a...
Hi all,
I'm in need to revisit this thread as there seems to be a lot of feather plucking going on again. The main time this occurs is when the hens are trying to dust bath.
They all do it to each other and eat the feathers. I have just bought some growers pellets to mix with the layers as...
I believe you are both spot on !
I do have a few girls molting and have seen most of the chickens eating feathers just lately.
Thanks so much for you help!
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the white things are in my chickens stool please? They sort of look like dandruff flakes.
They don't move and don't look worm like.
(The long things are pieces of straw)
Thank you
Hi all.
I have had a bird in quarantine due to an small wound she had. Whilst she has been isolated I believe she may have got into the habit of pecking/eating her eggs.
It is shortly coming up to the time in the UK where we have the shortest daylight. When the hens stop laying for a brief...
Hi,
No not yet, I currently haven't got sufficient space to quarantine them out of sight although I am building something.
If I put them in the isolation bit I had for an injured chicken they'd be inside all day.
Hi.
I'm still having pretty severe problems with feather plucking. A lot of it seems to be happening at dust bathing time when the chickens don't want to move. It seems to be 2 chickens mainly that are doing it, one being a known bully...
Shes even scratching their backs. A lot of the chickens...
I just wanted to post a comment to thank everyone who helped me with their input from the day I posted Elsa's injury on here.
It really filled me with confidence to treat my first hen injury and was very reassuring at a time when I didn't expect her to survive.
This site and it's users are...
Thank you so much for such a detailed response, it really is so valuable to me to get opinions from people like yourselves.
I'm going to print and frame that expression 'chickens aren't nice' haha. I love it and it's 100% worth remembering when we all try to anthropomorphize them.
The only...
I reintroduced Bluey (the bully) a few days to the flock after a few days of giving Elsa a chance to settle in.
All in all it's going pretty well however I have noticed that the nasty behavior is still very much evident although Elsa has gotten good at dispersing when Bluey goes to engage.
The...
It's a pellet layers feed. I dont know the exact protein %.
What feed do you use if you don't mind ?
Also, why is it do you think that the chickens would just let it happen ?
