Doesn't appear to be any pecking. Blood seams to be coming out from within and not on the surface and have never had a pecking problem in the past. 2 days ago she seemed fine. Very sudden Thx for advice
I've had chickens a long time. Never any real trouble. I currently have 4 birds that are 3 1/2 yrs old. I have black australorp hen that has blood oozing from vent. When I laid her down it appears that her insides seem to want to come out. Her belly is hanging really low between her legs. Any...
I have a 9 month old Deleware that seemed fine yesterday, today seems lethargic, walking slow and is distant from the other pullets. I threw treats out and she didn't come. Her crop is like an air sack. all other pullets crops are firm. mostly just standing in one area with very slow...

I live in the Chicago land area and we get pretty cold as well and my hens much prefer to be out versus cooped up. The cold doesn't seem to matter to them. They are not big fans of the deep snow but other than that, they are roaming around the yard everyday here
I have 3 laying pullets that have been laying for 3 months and all has been good. today however one of the shells was paper thin. Is this an issue? the layer mash has calcium in it and I also offer free choice oyster shells.
thanks for your responses. When you can only have 4 chickens due the local ordinance, it hurts when 25% of your flock doesn't lay. with that 4th bird laying, I would be able to give away more eggs to my neighbors lol.
her age is within a week. I know it was late may 2011 I got all them. I have searched high and low for another nest, but cant find it anywhere. the other 3 started squating and their personality changed and within a week they were laying.
And no eggs. doesn't seem like she is ever going to either. no changes in her personality, no squating. is there ever a point to give up? I have 3 other pullets that are the same age and have been laying for about 10-12 weeks, they are different breeds however.
i use a 16" fence to keep my chooks out of the flower beds etc... for my birds its seems the optimal height along with not being able to land on top. I find that that is a big thing. If they cant land on it, they dont seem to fly up on it or over it. Thats my expierence
Does the fence have a top bar? Something easy for them to land on? I have founds that they (my hens) don't try to fly over anything that they don't think they can land on. It's interesting, mine won't fly over a little fence that is 2' tall
My brother has orpingtons and lives in seattle and they are out in the rain all the time. They are almost 2 years old and he has no trouble. It looks like your in Washington as well. I would think it would depend on average outdoor temps as well
I have only been raising chickens for 8 months or so and only have 4 birds, 2 which ar BA's. I love um. They are great. My 2 favorites, easy going and well mannored..Seem to be pretty good layers as well
