    Nest found now what?

In my experience, all my broody hens will abandon the unhatched eggs after day 3 or 4, and take care of the chicks that are in need of food and water. She has a lot of work to do teaching them to forage and dust bathe and avoid danger. It's a beautiful thing.

    Bullying problem

This article by @azygous is an excellent resource to help. I have used this method myself, and it can be highly effective.. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/chicken-bully-chicken-victim-a-two-sided-issue.73923/

Hatching eggs vs grafting chicks to a broody hen?

Hello! Getting hold of day old chicks should work just fine, but aim for the 21 day mark if you can. I have had good success with day old sort of emergency replacements when a hen was sitting on infertile eggs, but it has always been at the 21-24 day mark. 2 weeks might be ok, but might not...

Hawks & Raccoons - what are the best deterrent???? This last week has been brutal, lost 6 chickens. 4 to hawks, 2 raccoons.....

Yikes! So sorry to hear that. I find that if you pen them up for a few weeks, the predators usually move on. Best deterrents I've found for aerial predators has been lots of hedges & trees, but I once had a bald eagle sitting low in a cedar tree trying to wait out the hen that had taken shelter...

RIR Hen with a mixed Roo

Thank you! You are a wealth of knowledge. With a dozen eggs under the hens, I'll know more in the next few weeks. I need some sort of webinar training on chicken genetics. It's fascinating, but there's so much to learn, and when I try reading the "e+ i/I alleles^ wh b^" language I just get...

How to tell if a easter egger roo carries the blue egg gene?

He looks like my Pedro who passed away last fall. Thanks to him I have a whole spectrum of blues to greens. Now I need more browns to compliment them lol

RIR Hen with a mixed Roo

Thank you! I actually had no idea he even had barring because it doesn't show in him. Is that because he has dominant? white that has turned his black to white?

RIR Hen with a mixed Roo

Thanks Jenerator! This black chick with the dot on it's head is from the RIR. Does this confirm that he has some barring - either single or double? The only 2 solid colour hens I'm hatching from are the Blue Cochin and the RIR. 4 in total So I guess it's a small selection from which to test.

    Help with indoor isolated chicken

I nursed a paralyzed hen back for almost 3 months inside with me. She was also one of my most feral hens, so it was hard on her. She won't die of boredom. She may need some time to rest and heal. As for food, I had some difficulties sometimes too. I found that raw or scrambled egg, wet mash...

RIR Hen with a mixed Roo

I inherited this mixed Rooster, so I know nothing about his genetics. I have 3 broodies that are sitting on eggs. The egg from the RIR in the photo hatched this morning, and the chick is black with a yellow dot on it's head. I understand that this means there's barring in the mix. Would this...

    Forever a broody hen

She must be quite a mother hen! I have a chronic broody that broods 3-4 times per year. She sits 3 weeks, raises them 5 weeks and usually in about 5 weeks she is broody again. But I've never seen her pullets return to the nest with her. She usually discourages any clingy ones from hanging...

Broody or Bust: Can You Handle a Sitting Hen?

The zen stare. I love it! I have 3 giving me that stare right now... And one screaches like a Pterodactyl whenever anything comes within 30'. The other 2 just stare. Oh and what's the deal with the straw on the head? Are they attempting to camouflage or do they get bored just sitting and...

Comment by '16 and me' in article 'Phosphorus Problems in the Land of “Perfect” Calcium'

Thanks for this interesting article @cabrita Chicks! I admit, I'm always thinking about Calcium and Protein, but haven't given phosphorus much thought. Any good suggestions on good sources of phosphorus?

    Treating lice in Canada

Thank you, I did post there first, but no response. I found a vet who was able to "prescribe" some 5% Permethrin. Unfortunately I live behind the Canadian iron curtain... everything is contraban.

    Permethrin treatment for lice

I have seen .5% as a dilution ratio using permethrin 10% (200 ml in 1gal) If the desired rate is .5% and I am starting with 5% Am I right to go with 200 ml in 1/2 gal?

    Permethrin treatment for lice

No. It's for goats, sheep & cows. Boss pour-on. It says to apply 3ml/100lb body weight.

    Permethrin treatment for lice

Hi all. I need some help with lice treatment. I was able to pick up some Boss Pour-on (5% Permethrin) to treat my flock after discovering wing lice. I've been reading posts here about diluting and spraying but I am not sure about the dilution ratio. Also I have 2 chicks that are 8 days old...

    Treating lice in Canada

Are there any Canadians who have found a product/ source for treating feather lice in chickens that is readily available? It is unfortunate that we have such difficulty getting some of the products that are readily available elsewhere to treat simple chicken problems. I have heard that there...
