    Turkeys and Electric Netting

Thank you for the research paper. I read through it and the part where it mentions BMD has deleterious impact on the beneficial gut bacteria the same as the bad makes me not want to feed this ever again. The authors also mentioned that it was still needing “further research”. lol no thanks. I...

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

Has anyone here ever used medicated feed? Good results / bad? I am finishing up my last bag of game bird starter and noticed the tag at bottom of my bag said medicated with Bacitracin Methylene Disalicylate...had to Google that one I ordered non medicated feed so either my feed store...

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

You’re gonna have some beautiful turkeys with that group for certain. The shipping process can be such an ordeal. Best of luck during the next few weeks with the poults! Keep very a close eye till about 4 weeks is what I was told.

What size flock do you have?

Make that 44… I think. I sold some, have given a few to friends that lost birds. Can’t remember exactly haha here’s a gaggle photo from this morning. There’s about a dozen goslings in the distance down the hill. They were introduced last night but they may be a little small to merge. I’ll have...

What size flock do you have?

12 Chickens, 7 turkeys, 6 Muscovy ducks, and 47 geese. We may have a problem hatching too many.

    Rebuilding flock

I’d worry about the lone hen. She will need companions. I think it’s up to your preference as to when but I have had decent luck incubating some of our chicken eggs mid-late summer and then raising the chicks into the winter. So if you bought chicks / hatching eggs now they would be feathered...

    Breeding Geese for Size

Haha can you imagine the amount of giant goose poo? My porch would be even more destroyed than it already is

    Breeding Geese for Size

Maybe we can get some tissue samples and then use the dna to breed back into domestic geese for better size….. and also to sic them on enemies

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

I haven’t used that bedding, it looks like they mashed recycled paper and cardboard into almost an insulation consistency. Interesting, let us know if poults try and chow on it. I first tried pine shavings, then went to shredded paper, and eventually settled on paper towels. I found poults just...

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

I hadn’t ever considered sand as substrate for turkeys in the brooder. Great way to get them the grit along with the food.

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

Okay, then all is not lost yet! Thank you, I will be very cautious with these males I agree with you, these forums and the folks that are really good on them is a great asset to have around! I bet you’ll get some really neat stuff in there! I hope you post your poults when they arrive! I had...

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

You’re definitely right about them being relentless. These turkeys will take the shock from the fence to grab a grasshopper on the other side and barely flinch or make a sound. These maybe too imprinted to keep long term, if so I’ll have to start over next spring… which would be a bummer. The...

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

Haha not sure if that counts as imprinting. What points did you order? How exciting! I will continue to share this experience as long as it’s useful for someone else. I know very little of the art of keeping turkeys, but so far I love it. I’d be pretty excited about poults again if I had my...

    Embden vs white chinese

I don’t see the typical neck plumage that Anser types like Embdens show. The body is lean and very upright and the bill looks more Chinese too. I’d say white Chinese

    Turkeys and Electric Netting

6 week update: poults are big enough to go outside and are being rotated in a brooder / tractor alongside some young geese of similar size. They are surrounded by a few 164’ strands of net and are large enough now that they can’t squeeze through. I did start taking them out of brooder for guided...

    Dimorphic and Dilute

Speaking of African geese, if a buff male breeds a normal female does he throw buff to the female offspring? I saw three buff goslings mixed in with some of my other African cross geese and I sexed them today and all three were female.

    Dimorphic and Dilute

I saw a photo of one of your white dewlap Africans and it was really beautiful. There’s an Australian fella, Michael Peele, that has made white dewlap Tolouse. I am growing out some Dewlap Buff Tolouse this spring and want to see if I can get some of these spectacular colors with an embden in...

    Dimorphic and Dilute

Okay I see now that the dilute blue comes into play now when the calculator for the embden is done right. This makes sense with what I’m seeing. I have several goslings that are buff, more are white or white with grey. Very few are that light dilute lavender color. Thank you again!

    Adult goose killing baby

Infanticide is not uncommon in nature. I had wondered this same thing after seeing a domestic Toulouse gander of mine drown his own offspring. He did it his first season and when he repeated on his second I knew that some geese will just do this. I’ve had an handful of other ganders that never...
