    2026 Chick Thread!

For 3 years now we have gone with gold sex links, as they are quiet, are prolific layers and don't cause much in the way of problems. We got ours here in April, (I'm in Eastern Idaho). But,,,, after two years, their laying is cut down to about 20% of normal. I have 23 of them and 7 are 2 years...

Need a new, improved run. Pics please!

Just a little advice. Please DO have a decent slant, especially if you are in snow country. It will save you from a few problems, like snow loading causing major sag in you not heavy enough roof. Please don't ask me how I know this!

How much space do 13 chickens need

I have an 8 ft x 24 ft run for 23 chickens. Seems to be just fine. 16 x 16 is good, since you are doing a little free ranging.

Two questions about 1/2" hardware cloth

I've always just used wire. I use different wiring methods for different wire connections. Cheapest way.

Heat source. Too many opinions. Gotta quit FB.

That's a nice coop. Here in Idaho, I just have an enclosed, insulated coop. No heat. I do heat the water to keep it from freezing. Never had a problem with freezing chickens. (Knock on wood). We get our chicks in April and by the time they are fully feathered they just naturally acclimate as the...

    What veggies do chickens like?

Free range means they are eating the good bugs, mice and anything else that is natural in their make up. Why eat veggies when you can eat protein/meat?

Eggs what do you do if they are dirty and how dirty is acceptable? Maybe you could show me your eggs you collect?

If you can't wipe off the dirt, just wash them and put them in the refrigerator.

How many hens for a 4 person household?/Potential oversupply??

We have 23 Gold sex links, (chicken math thing), and we are getting 11 or 12 eggs a day. 8 chickens will probably be enough for your use.

Coops done! What do you think?

They will fit with no problems. Just keep in mind your chicken math!

Where do you guys keep your supplies?

I have more chickens then some folks, but yes, a steel trash can with a tight lid handles any feed storage you need!

Automatic coop doors: I'd love your input

For over 2 years I have had the Omlet door on my coop. Works every day without fail.(Knock on wood.) And it can operate an optional coop light if you wish. Easy to take care of.

    Talk to me about grit

My local Mill and Elevator place that sold me my chicks, 2 years ago and again the first of April said; Just use grit for the new chicks until they can get to the dirt. Then they won't have problems. And this guy has been advising for well over 40 years. I followed his advice on most everything...

Hey, Will Raccoons Eat My Chickens?

Kill the dang critter! I've paid 1000's for the damage caused by those damned raccoons. Kill it and bury it.

Review by 'Demarvell' in article 'Using Sand In Your Chicken Coop'

I use masonry sand in the run, but use wood filings in the smaller coop. Helps mediate the temperature. This is a very helpful read!.

First 2 days of January 2025. Here in Idaho.

No, I'm too cheap for that. Just an East facing coop and a well insulated coop. I full expected them to slow down and they did to about 5 a day for a week, then they are back laying. Not full speed, but close. Late summer was 9 to 10 a day, every day.

For the first 2 days in freezing snowy January 2025, my 9 hens produced 15 eggs. Very good for this time of year.

Northern Hemisphere chicken keepers. Hang in there.

I might be thinking wrong, but I let my chickens do their own thing. When it gets darker they lay a few less, but they are still laying at about 65% as a W.A.G.. Gold sex links. Very good layers. I don't care about colored eggs or fancy chickens. I need their eggs to keep me healthy. They are...
