I too have been having similar issues with my 2 year old BR's - out of the 7, at least 3 are laying soft shelled and shell-less eggs. Was thinking it was the organic feed I was giving them - they were eating the larger grains & stuff. and ignoring the powdery minerals in the mix. I switched...
So I've had her penned up for the past 24 hours and my vet friend dropped by in the afternoon and looked at her - she thought that she probably had something under the eyelid and that it would work its way out. However, this morning, though the hen has the lid open, her eye is looking white -...
I tried opening the eye - she let me easily catch her which isn't normal, so I don't think she's feeling that great. We had a hawk attack which took out one of her sisters a few days before, but I didn't notice any issues like this the next day, so I'm thinking she got some dust in it or something?
well darn - was going to use one of those rope lighting thingies. Good plan gone awry I guess. We're going to put in a "skylight" - one of those clear panels that come on some storage sheds. Not that that will solve the amount of daylight issue........

I have to admit I agree with GAchick - mine free range in our fenced yard, but I look at the neighborhood dogs as no different than the hawks and foxes in our area - I take a chance letting them free-range without me around. But I also agree that it's cowardly of the neighbor to not let you...
I don't want to stir up stuff, but I'm currently reading Joel Salatin's book "Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal" and he has a chapter about raw milk and dairy in it. He talks about when the Industrial Revolution was changing so much in cities, how dairies sprang up around breweries so they...
All right - we have 8 BR hens - been laying for more than a month.
So this morning there was a shell less egg on the floor - it wasn't eaten; it looks like it was laid while one of the girls was on the roost, breaking when it landed.
And just now, the 8th girl laid her egg. . .
So there were...
