    My mystery chicks’ gender

12 weeks update. The barred one with some rusty color and head feather is sure a cockerel. The one I’m most unsure about is the grey EE. What’s with that one feather tail?

Which game fowl do you think this is?

I’m curious. Which state does your friend live? I’ve never seen backyard hens like that. I’m relatively new to raising chickens so not much knowledge about chicken breeds anyway.

Which game fowl do you think this is?

They remind me the wild chickens everywhere on Kauai and Maui islands. Look just like that. ( I read somewhere the wild chickens there are Junglefowls, ancestry of domestic chickens. The ones in Hawaii islands I think is from Atvaism (back to ancestry traits).

    My mystery chicks’ gender

Yes , it’s the same bird. And the earliest one I suspected as a male. I change my mind about the grey/blue one and the the other barred chick daily😅

    My mystery chicks’ gender

Hi seasoned chicken owners, I hatched 4 eggs from some backyard eggs I purchased. Hatch day 5/21-23 (19, 20, 21 days incubation time). The chicks are just over 7 weeks now. 3 from brown eggs, the grey chick from a blue egg (owner said the hen was an EE). Two chicks (one barred with some rustic...

Topic of the Week - Candling Eggs

I use a miner’s headlamp plus a flash light encased in cut out boxes to see through dark/thick shelled eggs. Pictures below taken at 6.5 days: Brown egg, blue egg, and a Trader Joe’s white egg. And the headlamp. I did notice the lamp surface gets somewhat hot so only candle briefly and/or on the...

What kind of mix is s/he?

No problem. Mystery is the fun part :D. I'm more curious about the dark grey comb chick. After some further googling, I think it might carry some Fibromelanstic Olive Egger mix, given that it was hatched from a light olive colored egg. The baby chick picture in the link below very much looks...

What kind of mix is s/he?

I have no idea of the parent birds. I didn't ask. I believe it was hatched from a light olive colored egg. I suspect they all are barn yard mixes:rolleyes:. The black chick is all black appearance wise but I doubt it could be a pure Ayam Cemani. I never tried to inspect its tongue. Eyes look...

What kind of mix is s/he?

These 4 weeks old babies were hatched from light olive and light brown eggs I bought from a local lady. One black chick has black/dark greyish comb. What could s/he be? And I think it’s a pullet. It grew tail very early on at about 7 days. I think the other black bird is a cockerel given the...
