Rooster with a Rose “comb over”

Thank you for your advice. I'm going to hold off for a couple weeks (when I'm processing my meat birds.) I understand that roosters are very easy to come by but last time a rooster come into the flock that i didn't raise, he brought lice with him. I know that they can be treated but I'd rather...

Rooster with a Rose “comb over”

Hi Mrs K, I have 4 hens and 1 rooster (mr comb over) from one clutch 3 pullets and 4 cockerels from a clutch a month later. I would like to keep at least one cockerel and the first four hens are very bonded with him. I don’t have children and roosters are useful for breeding and protection. I...

Best practices for ethical meat birds raising

I also lost my dog who unbeknownst to me, had been keeping the fox away. After losing two pullets to a fox (I saw her out my window carrying one away to bring to her kits) I did a little research and someone mentioned leaving a radio on. Since I’ve had the radio on low all day, no more fox...

Rooster with a Rose “comb over”

Hi, I have an Ameraucana rooster whose comb is normally flopped over his left eye. He is very handsome and the girls seem to really like him. My question is this: I have 4 other roosters and I’m wondering if Dinkus (that’s his name) should be culled because of this trait. I imagine that it...

    Ill-informed advice

They were relatively new (from this year.) I stumbled on a thread when I was looking up “chickens eating cat food” because I found my chickens in the kitchen eating out of the cat bowl😊

    Ill-informed advice

I have been reading a lot of advice regarding feeding poultry. Some of it regarding pet (cat/dog) food. Someone said that most dog foods are plant based, this is not true! Maybe some but definitely not all! Please don’t give advice regarding feeding by making broad generalizations when it comes...

Lump on neck of turkey poult

I was able to lance it and get some pus out. Do you have any ideas about what could cause this to happen? They free range in my garden and backyard.

Lump on neck of turkey poult

I considered that. I felt it again and there may be a very small harder spot under the fluid. Do you think that I should still try to drain it?

Lump on neck of turkey poult

I have 6-10 week old Midget White poults. This morning I noticed a bump on the side of this little ladies chin. Has anyone seen this before? My hens get swollen faces from insect stings but this isn’t from a bite. It’s on the inside, not the outside. Otherwise, she’s looking great. Any help...

    What am I doing wrong?

Since this is a complete aside from the original post, I’ll try to be brief. It is a fact that acv with the mother (which I make myself) has probiotic benefits (similar to kombucha) which helps in the digestive tract. This can help with cocci health. Also EM-1 has been proven to keep salmonella...

    What am I doing wrong?

Hello, I always add ACV to chicks and poults water for the first month then I switch to a little EM-1 (a microbiological additive) I’ve never had any problems and everyone is very healthy. I am wondering why you don’t use it (in all capitals and bold!)

EM-1 (effective microorganism) & bokashi for chickens

Hello, I know that this post was from a while ago but I would recommend contacting Teraganix directly. They are willing to answer any questions regarding EM products that you might have. It’s wonderful stuff.

    Naked turkey poult butt

That is not what it is. After further investigation, it’s just one poult and its vent and rear end have no feathers. I believe that it’s a major birth defect. I’m thinking that it might be best to cull it.

    Naked turkey poult butt

Hello! I just hatched 9 Midget White eggs last week. A couple hatched a little early and one has a naked butt! It was wet and a little swollen looking. I wasn’t sure what to do but I saw a post about using preparation H and a Vetericyn. I could get Vetericyn so I used blue kote. Has anyone every...

HELP!! Turkey poult with leaking vent!

Hi, I know that this is an older post but I have two poults with this issue (I think that they were born too soon.) I’m going to the store to buy the supplies and I’m going to give this a try. Thank you for the info!

You should transition them to grower feed after 4 weeks. They will need to be supplemented with grit too. Good like with your flock!

Alternative feed to Scratch & Peck organic layer feed

Hello! I feed New Country Organics and my birds are very happy and healthy. They also lay very delicious eggs! The feed comes in a lot of different forms and some are in 25# bags. It’s pretty pricey but it you serve it wet (doesn’t even have to be fermented) it’s more cost effective with less waste.

Hi! I was feeding my chickens FF and dry feed 24/7. It was a pricey organic feed and the eggs were delicious! But I had to cull a few birds and found that they had fatty liver disease from over feeding! None died from it but I think that I was “killing them with kindness” figuratively. I was...

    Egg Yolk Peritonitis?

Hi, I would recommend watching a video about the proper way to drain some fluid from the area. If there is egg yolk in the fluid, then it is egg yolk peritonitis. If it is, I believe that there isn’t a cure. I’m sorry, I wish that I could be of more help.
