Ugh. I hate chickens dying. Male or female. I get attached even tho I’ve had farm animals my whole life. I guess I *hope* that one sounding an alarm will be enough. The hens don’t alert eachother one bit.
Is there any other kind of animal (short of a dog) that will effectively fight off hawks...
Do you all know if d’Uccles are good flock protectors? I don’t need a breeder, but do want someone to warn the girls about hawks in our area. This guy is up for rehoming and I’m tempted to get him because he looks cool.
The white one is our old boy, but he’s a pet and stays around the houses...
Wondering what these two roosters really are. The white one was said to be Ameraucana and the brown a Mille Fleur d'Uccle.
I’ve read that Ameraucanas only come in select colors and some variations of those colors. I’ve read the standard and looked at all the photos but I can’t figure out if...
You say the Peafowl keep the hawks away? Do they get along with your chickens? Do they sleep in the coop? I’m considering getting some (or geese) because my chickens keep getting eaten by something (we are guessing a hawk or a coyote).
I’ve kept her on chick starter, plus buttermilk and yogurt, and grit with probiotics. I’ve also added apple cider vinegar and polyvisol vitamins to her water. She gets garlic and oregano occasionally. I’ve massaged her crop daily and read all the articles and doesn’t seem like it’s anything...
Here is a link to a video of her popping around like nothing is wrong. She seems super happy.
As a recap: She has a swollen crop, with air in it, and thick clear fluid with no smell will come out occasionally if I put pressure on it. It doesn’t seem like sour crop, and it’s not just inhaled...
@azygous and @Wyorp Rock, I’m finally uploading a video of her and photos without the red light. And a picture of her poop, too. For sure she is skinny on the rest of her body, so it’s like she doesn’t digest the food quite right or efficiently. But I’ll try and upload the video of her going for...
Hi! I’m wondering if you ever figured out what this was… And also if your baby chick lived. I have one with some thing that looks and sounds very similar.
Yes, I agree that it is crazy that she’s eating and drinking and happy after having this balloon on her chest for a month. Her poop is normal, too. She also totally chowed down the grit I offered her.
I didn’t know that there was such a thing as a ruptured air sac, so I will look that up… I...
DotToDot she doesn’t get grass but she does peck at her pine shavings some. It’s been like this a month… does it usually stick around that long? Also doesn’t stink at all which I read sour crop will…
I have a Black Copper Marans that is about 2 months old. She has a huge swollen crop, with the water balloon feel, and has been this way for about a month. I’ve done everything I’ve read to do - massage it, burp her, feed her oil, apple cider vinegar, oregano, grit.
Her brother had something...
Good for you for trying “all the things” to do what you could to help her! Also for doing the necropsy yourself!! I’ve done the same thing on a calf that died because it’s just good to know. Takes some guts though, so good for you for loving them enough to want to know 💪
I’m going to guess...
Man, your story is scary and I feel super bad for you going through this. Did she make out ok or has she declined further? How are the other chicks doing? I’d love to know what worked and what didn’t - I don’t have this problem YET, but seems like I keep getting the book thrown at me so I’m...
I am super interested in whether you have found any further information at this point or whether you have the same opinion now. I’m not wanting to vaccinate my new chicks but also not wanting to be careless if it’s *actually* safer for them. I worry, as others have stated, that the vaccine will...
I don’t understand how people think “relocating” wild animals is a good idea… we also live a ways out and have caught people releasing raccoons not far from our chickens… we’re like…. Get those OUT OF HERE!!!
