How to get established flock to accept newbies.

I have come up with my solution. The established hens are in a separate pen divided by their feeder and waterer. Giving the newer chickens a bit larger area. This is the best I could do. I could have sold the hens and had offers. I love my chickens and didn't want to part with them if I...

These chickens are not true Barred rocks right? I bought them from Rural King as 3 day old chicks in February 2023. Supposedly from Mt. Healthy.

Possibly but as babies they were black with white dot on head and Rural King stated they only buy pullets. The egg layer special seems more likely. I am not sure if I will ever find out until they start laying eggs. It's a fluke that I got 2 roosters. I sent an email to Hoovers to see if I...

Ok I have done some investigating and have come to the conclusion that the breed of chickens I have are a combination of silver cuckoo marans and copper cuckoo marans. I contacted the manager at Rural King who confirmed that they purchase their chicks from Hoover Hatcheries. They only purchase...

Unfortunately no, but that is why I won't be gone longer than 3 days. I do have cameras in the coop area.

So I run them separately the 3 hens then the 10 chicks. Why I am so insistent on getting them integrated is the chicks are much bigger than I anticipated. They need more room. They will have enough once they all get along. Also I want to be able to leave them for 3 days to get away with our...

How to get established flock to accept newbies.

Here is the complete size of the yard. We live in an RV park and there are restrictions. They have bushes to hide. I am working on making a separate yard for the chicks. I have to put up an ivy privacy fence so we don't bother neighbors.

I let them out in our front yard. However when I let all of them out all 13 it's the same scenerio.

I have a total of 13 chickens in a 45 Sq foot for the coop. From what I read that should be adequate.

Yes I noticed that too. I am puzzled. They are very sweet both the roosters and the hens. I have never had chickens get this big so quickly. I had raised Cornish crosses once, and I don't remember them being this big at 8 weeks. They were big but these seem bigger.

I am starting to agree with you. As I have been on the hunt to find out the breed of my chicks. They do seem to be Golden Cuckoo Marans. I will not be for certain until we get eggs from the girls.

Sure. We have 45 square feet. One of the feed stations is close to the house where they go up to hide. Not visible in this shot but it is to the right.

Well I have asked in BYC earlier today. We are in agreement that they are some type of dual purpose breed. I thought I was buying Barred Rocks but now I don't know what I have. They will be 3 months old May 17, 2023.
