Purple Comb that Comes and Goes

Update: This evening, the tips of her comb are purple again. Not the whole thing like previous nights, but the tips are dark. She's been inside all day.

Purple Comb that Comes and Goes

We've kept her inside all day and her comb has stayed red. She is eating and drinking plenty, and seems to be acting completely normal. My guess is that because it has stayed red while she's inside that this has something to do with temperature?

Purple Comb that Comes and Goes

It was very cold the previous week (-40), but this week it was -5 and above. Today and yesterday were in the 20s. I thought frostbite maybe, but does that come and go? I'll get a photo of her comb tomorrow morning. I saw her drinking normally today, but I'll keep a close eye on her water intake...

Purple Comb that Comes and Goes

Hi, All! I've got a 3 year old Buff Orpington girl who has something going on. Last night when I was tucking them in for the night, I noticed Parsley's comb and wattles were dark purple. I brought her inside - she was bright, alert, and didn't seem in distress. I kept her inside for the night...

    Extreme Cold Warning

Just about -40 with the wind chill. Ambient temperature was around -18.

    Extreme Cold Warning

Well, I'm happy to say they all made it through the night just fine in the coop! Not only that: this morning they went out into their covered run when the automatic door opened. I went outside to close the door and keep them in the coop, but they beat me. They are all in the run on roosts. We...

    Extreme Cold Warning

Thank you! I am worried about reacclimating them to the cold if I bring them inside. The warmest it will get this next week is 15F. Will the shock of the cold after being inside be dangerous?

    That's the kind I have!

    Extreme Cold Warning

Here are photos of our set-up, if that helps any. You can see the ventilation right under the roof, the run covered with tarps, and the heaters/covered windows near the roosts. We use sand for litter.

    Extreme Cold Warning

Hey, All! We have an extreme cold warning here tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone has advice for how to help my girls through it. The high is going to be -20F with wind chills up to -40F. They have radiant heaters mounted near the roosts they can lean against for extra warmth (doesn't heat...

    Hen Stopped Laying Eggs

I've looked for a secret nest and haven't found one yet! She hasn't been visiting the boxes at all.

    Hen Stopped Laying Eggs

Yes! I thought my layers would eat the oyster shell and my non-layer would pick around it. But I will take your advice and stop mixing it together! Thank you.

    Hen Stopped Laying Eggs

It's now been over a week with no sign of an egg, but she's acting the same as always so I'm trying not to worry. I have 3 Buff Orpington hens total. The coop is big - an old converted shed about 8x8ft. The run is about 20x20.

    Hen Stopped Laying Eggs

Hi, All! I have a 2-year-old Buff Orpington hen. She started laying eggs after taking a break for winter about 2 weeks ago. She was laying eggs almost every day. Suddenly, she stopped. She has not laid an egg in a week. I just took her to the vet for a routine check-up and she was pronounced in...

Chicken on Hormone Implant - Feeding Advice

Yes, the vet said as much. We will take her in for another implant when she shows signs of laying again. 😊

    Hormone Implant in Chickens

I just got my girl, Thyme, a hormone implant back in August. She was very swollen and lost all her feathers on her butt. The vet suspects a reproductive disease or complication (she's had reproductive infections previously). She is 18 months old. After two months, Thyme has lost over a half...

Chicken on Hormone Implant - Feeding Advice

Here are some better pics. You can see there is a distinct line on her beak and near her skin it looks very dry and maybe peeling. Is that concerning? Totally normal?

Chicken on Hormone Implant - Feeding Advice

These are the best I could get this morning. She doesn't like my phone and kept backing away. 😂 You can kind of see where it looks like it is maybe peeling/dry where the beak meets her skin? The cracks or maybe scratches are so fine they don't show up.

Chicken on Hormone Implant - Feeding Advice

Hello! My girl Thyme has a hormone implant and will not lay eggs again (she has reproductive issues). I am not sure what to feed her and the flock (2 other Buff Orpingtons, all 18 months old). Knowing all the calcium in layer feed would hurt her now, I've switched the flock to Nutrena 18%...
