This comment is too relatable. I never thought hardware cloth was going to have such a main character position in my life, and I also never thought it was going to require so much blood loss 😅
Newbie question here from the peanut gallery... What are the patties y'all are making right now? Is this to help them through the gap between slightly warmer temps with no flowers, yet?
Absolutely! I went to the local Bee School this weekend with HABA and met several vendors. Don Lam Bees was one of them and they mentioned they sell out of nucs by the end of February, so I've been sitting on their checkout page but haven't pulled the trigger. I really felt very welcomed by the...
Hello!! New here from Southwest Michigan 🫶🏼 Ordering my nuc very soon and wondering if anyone else is in the area who may be open to mentoring me? I'm becoming more involved in the HABA (Holland Area Beekeepers Association).
I'm pretty sure my ventilation is not as good as it should be in the old coop, but none of my other birds (even ones with larger combs/waddles) have issues with frostbite. This guy just has ridiculously large waddles and a large comb, especially for here in the cold. I rescued him from the UP so...
I have the 125 W heat plate, and it crapped out too!
My poor boy with big waddles has frostbite on them. I know we arent supposed to, but I'm definitely putting some heat in the new coop, just behind the roosts and those supplemental heat plates, no heat lamps or anything. Only to be used when...
Here's a couple of shots from a local drone photographer of the lake freezing over. The lighthouse and South Pier Beacon are completely covered with ice from the massive waves that come in this time of year. Ice "pancakes" are forming, which means the lake is starting to freeze over. Oh, and...
You and I seem to have similar weathers. It's going to be 9°F here tomorrow OF COURSE with wind chills. I'm right next to Lake Michigan, so lots of Lake Effect snow, about 2" every night and our lake is freezing up but not super fast. But we don't have hurricanes 😅
My drive to work the other day
Well, now that we're speaking of fitness trackers... Hubby got me an Oura ring for Christmas, so I've been learning it and I'm really amazed at how well it tracks my sleep and stress (and my cycle)! It'll take about a month to fully calibrate, but it is really fascinating. I use FitBit to track...
Loki is doing so much better today. His eye is nearly perfect. One last round of goop on his eye and some Vaseline on his comb (I'm not touching those waddles, tho). Do y'all think he'd be good to rejoin his ladies tomorrow or should I wait for all the scabbing to heal more?
So, speaking of mid-winter thaws... My two roosters must've been all in their feels thanks to the fresh spring-ish air. My dominant roo (Clint) beat the snot out of the less dominant one (Loki). Clint went for a ride today to the rooster sanctuary where he was happily greeted by some other nice...
