If you can watch the snake if they are inside a coop get its attention then watch where it tries to escape. Lot of times they will use the same way they got in and it will show you where the weak point is.
Depends on the coop materials. Wire should be small square loops, smaller the better. If the coop is a free standing style you can put wire on the bottom. If it rains a snake can find the smallest point and basically tunnel it’s way in. If you use corrugated tin like I have. Use those matching...
Can’t offer anymore advice then what you are already doing. Up to her now. Our small pullet hen Little Bit was in a death clutch of a snake. I fought for and got her free. The mrs nursed her and thank goodness she eventually pulled through. But all we can do is wait and hope they don’t give up...
Yes, I believe they do. One of our hens we named Possum catches attitude. She lays on her left side with one leg kicked behind her like she is dead…hence the name. Told her to get the other girls up in the roost cause a storm was blowing in. She ignored me and played dead so I said “I know you...
Have gone around and reenforced where a second snake may have entered the coop, we lost another bird, the girl we named Pecker for always pecking the tin. He actually ate her and he couldn’t escape. He also paid with his life…did sharpen the machete. Started with 12 and now have 8 pullets, two...
Have been getting some good pointers from these posts. In order for my birds to have the most visibility for predators, I have removed everything from the coop that could hide a potential predator. Don’t want anybody to get ambushed. We live we learn. Keep the posts coming.
No rodent issue with two prolific mousers around. They earn there keep. In the dark with one of my birds dead…did not hesitate to take it out. Should have stuck mice and rats.
Graphic of deceased predator Posting a few pics of the snake I went to war with at about 1 in the morning. Reminder: sharpen machete. I think it was a cottonmouth ( North Texas )
The Mrs and I have named another one Pecker. We can only ID her by listening. The coop tin, feed tote or lumber. She goes around pecking everything. Think she will have the shortest beak of them all.
She usually flops on her right side and can balance on the 2x4 at the wireless chicken charger. She tried her left side and fell off the charger 😁 then looked at the others like trying figure out who pushed her.
We have two pullets with lighter colors so far. One we call Goldie and one I have named Possum. Possum is a character, she gets under the heat lamp(chicken charging system) she will flop down on her side and kick one leg out like she is dead…aka Possum.
