Yep, with a 6' fence, you'll definitely need to create a high point for the net to prevent it sagging down to head height. With your coop being centrally located, you might be able to build something onto the side of it that stands a few feet above the roof, rather than sinking a stand-alone...
I think you'll be able to install it over that space fairly easily. Your bushes seem to be at the edge of the run, so if you have to slit the net to go around a trunk and then sew it back up, it won't be too difficult.
The big question is how high are your fence posts? If they aren't taller...
I keep bantam Dominiques here near Raleigh NC. They do very well; I've not seen any issues with heat.
That said they have full shade in their run, and they are bantams, which have a higher body surface area to mass ratio.
The leaf blower works well for the leaves, but the chickens are terrified of it. Maybe I need a quieter one, as mine is gas-powered.
The pine needles are hanging in the netting, and when the blower hits them they rotate around from the force of the air and remain stuck. A few come loose but the...
Yeah, I only lost one but of course she was one of the favorites.
Thanks! I'm particularly pleased with how the deer fencing and the netting blend into the woods.
The only issue is the leaves during the fall. And of course the pine needles, which are going to hang in the netting forever.
I...
It was a huge pain; aart was right! I got it done eventually though.
I used one tree near the center as my main tent pole, and installed an eye bolt 12 feet up or so, then ran 12g nylon monofilament out to the trees on the edge that support my fence. Then I hung the net over the lines like a...
The mystery continues. Goblin is now acting fine, but another of my reds is being fluffy and low energy, and had this thing hanging off her butt. Is this a worm or something else? It's kind of large. Over an inch if stretched out.
So just a little update -- Goblin seems to be doing much better. After we kept her indoors for a couple of days, the watery poops cleared up, and she stopped drinking so much. She was defecating normally by Thursday morning.
I think her being in the egg box earlier in the week was a red...
Sure thing; I'll definitely post in 6 weeks or so when the rooster combs start combing in and I can tell for sure. I appreciate your insights!
Your Dominique females are actually much darker than my first batch from last year. Most of my females had large white/yellow head spots similar to...
You'll note that Chick 1 and 2 don't have much in the way of dark lines on the legs. Chick 1 has a few spots perhaps.
Chick 3 has notable dark patches on the legs, although not a line.
They all have dark patches on their beaks.
Right now I'm thinking 1 and 2 are roosters, and 3 might be a...
Alright, here's some photos I took yesterday. They're 6 days old in these photos. This batch is much friendlier than the ones I shipped in last year, and they've imprinted on me and my wife -- to the point they start alarm-peeping if we leave the room their brooder is in.
Chick 1 (seen...
Very interesting! I'll have to get some good closeups of each chick and see if it's possible to tell the gender of the other two.
These chicks are all pure Dominiques; my reds weren't laying yet when I collected these eggs and put them in the incubator.
Goblin (the pullet) is moving around more and is being vocal. There has been some flapping and exploration of our kitchen. She did another watery poop (see photo). Her crop feels squishy and like there's probably just water in there.
I did give her 1/3 of a yolk with another 50-100g or so of...
I was thinking we might want to limit food if she is eggbound and cannot defecate properly.
She's still squirting water out the vent (at least 1x that we witnessed this morning) so I don't think she is constipated. I'll work some more calcium pills into some egg yolk and give that to her.
We were able to feed her some Calcium citrate this morning; another 100-200g in chunks. I think she aspirated one chunk which was unfortunate, but was able to sneeze it out.
We then soaked her for 30 minutes. I prodded a bit to see if I could massage the egg out, but didn't use much force at...
Working together, we were able to get a few more Tums chunks into her. Unfortunately that's calcium carbonate, not citrate. I'd estimate only 100-200 grams were swallowed; she fought us pretty hard and did NOT want the Tums. Hopefully since she 1/4 the size of a normal hen that will help her...
I appreciate the link. We'll follow those directions.
My wife lubricated the vent/canal about 2-2.5 inches in (this is a bantam) and did not feel an egg, but again we may not know what to feel for.
We'll give her about an hour and then maybe do the warm bath.
Right now she's drinking water...
This being my first flock I don't know exactly what I am feeling for, but yeah there is an egg sized hard lump right where I think the oviduct is above the cloaca.
Does excess water consumption correlate?
