    Hen severely injured

I hope by now that you have separated her from the rest of the flock, or she will not survive. My rooster’s days are numbered. He constantly jumps on the smallest hen, and he’s violent without romance.

    Hen severely injured

So sad. Did your rooster do this? I've seen mine grab the back of the hen's head to hold her down and mate. I stop him when I see this. You may need to separate her from the others until she heals. I would put Neosporin on it to fight infection.

Predator Proof Enough to Leave Door Open?

I am in eastern NC. It is hot and humid. I have 2 coops inside a 13x10 run, but my chickens free range during the day. Should I recover my run with 1/4” hardware cloth? It came with regular green chicken wire and it looks so flimsy. I inspect the run everyday. So far nothing has got in yet, but...

What kind of wood chips? I live in eastern NC and we have a lot of rain. Keeping it dry is the problem. Everything I’ve read suggests buying construction sand.

How to clean Dust in Coop

I grow herbs - mint, rosemary, parsley, fennel, oregano, and add cinnamon to sprinkle around the coop making it smell better. Baking soda helps a lot too!

How to set up a chicken dust bath

Construction grade sand is good for dust bath. A kitty litter pan is a good size. My chickens use the pine shavings and my nice potting soil in my garden to bathe. 😩

How to clean Dust in Coop

I didn’t think you were supposed to use Bleach? The smell gives the birds upper respiratory problems. I/2 vinegar and 1/2 water works well. I also buy a spray on Amazon for chicken coops.

Official BYC Poll: How Often Do You Clean Your Coop?

I clean the coop about every two days. In this heat, the smell draws a lot of flies. I clean the run/pen once a week. If it rains, I clean it when it stops raining. I’m a clean freak and the chickens are free range. It’s difficult for them to find bugs in a clean yard. 😂🤣😆

    NC Crazy Chicken Mom

I am a new Chicken Mom of 28. I have 3 coops that look like beach houses, inside a 13x10 ft chicken run outlined in colorful Christmas lights. My chicks were born on March 31 and they are Rhode Island Reds. They are very beautiful and full of personality! Now that they are a little older, I see...

Human Affected by Chickens-Stye (Not for the faint of heart)

I am on my 3rd stye now and they’re in both eyes this time. All I can find out is the pharmacist and several other chicken farmers told me to wear gloves and a mask. I’d have to wear goggles to protect my eyes. These things hurt! And my eyes are swollen also. In the mornings, I can’t open my...
