Broody hen and spitting up liquid.

Thank you! I think her crop is just hanging low and not draining [pendulous crop]! I wrapped some fabric around her crop and I think it's starting to drain properly now since she's acting like she's full of food when wearing it (falling asleep instead of actively looking for food/brooding.)

Broody hen and spitting up liquid.

My very broody hen wakes up in the morning and spits up a little [mostly clear] liquid. Her crop is very full, but I assume this has to do with her being broody and her digestion being slowed down. Is it normal for her to be spitting up liquid occasionally [maybe 1-2 times per day?] She...

Sour crop and monistat - any tips for feeding it?

Thank you! It's okay, stuff like this happens sometimes. Also, thank you again for the advice and trying to help the little guy!

Sour crop and monistat - any tips for feeding it?

He was in a box all night with a heating plate, in the dark - so unlikely that he was drinking. His crop is still full of liquid this morning. He is a little more active today if that's a good sign, yesterday he basically slept all day but now he gets up rarely and moves a little (then goes back...

Sour crop and monistat - any tips for feeding it?

Thank you!! This is a good idea, I'm going to dilute it a little with water (so it spreads more easily in the crop) and feed it through a syringe. I went with monistat 2% because I read it's quite powerful and if the infection is fungal then it will kill it quite quickly (and monistat is widely...

Sour crop and monistat - any tips for feeding it?

I have a sick 8-week old chick who seems to clearly have sour crop (brown liquid is coming out of his beak sometimes/spitting up brown liquid.) I have isolated the chick, gave it apple cider vinegar mixed with water. I have been routinely massaging the chick, which he's fine with. His energy is...

Chick who overeats/overdrinks. What could be the cause?

It's a silkie, I've learned that he's just kinda lazy and loves to lay around and eat. He's perfectly healthy now and growing normally. He's a little more active now too and runs and flaps, just less than the other chicks. Would rather lay around/eat.

Dry crusty skin on chick [not mites?]

I believe his condition is improving! This is 12-16ish hours after starting terramycin [before/after,] I believe he has some sort of bacterial skin infection around his eyes because his skin seems dry/flaky. I applied Neosporin to the outer parts which makes his feathers kinda discolored later...

Dry crusty skin on chick [not mites?]

I can't find any evidence of mites. He gets build up in his eyes occasionally so I think it's just eye irritation from him scratching and his habits. He eats kinda strangely where he likes to whip his beak back and forth through the feed to move it around and it kicks up in his face constantly...

Dry crusty skin on chick [not mites?]

Unfortunately his habit of rolling in feed/throwing feed and irritating his eyes came back to bite him and the problem has grown a little worse. His eyes get itchy after doing it and he has managed to scratch all the baby feathers off around his eyelids and irritate them! I've just been trying...

Dry crusty skin on chick [not mites?]

This is a nearly 4-week-old silkie. When I got it, it looked premature/very runty and had several health issues (curled toe, pecked eye, weakness, pasty butt) that have now been corrected or just healed. The chick is just as healthy and energetic [just smaller] as other chicks now, but seems to...

Chick has developed fixation with waterer and trying to eat out of it

Thank you, I'll grab a new waterer tomorrow, he has already grown fixated on two different waterers now. Lol! It almost seems like he's doing it because he just likes eating food that way, but I never considered that he thinks the waterer is mama hen.

Chick has developed fixation with waterer and trying to eat out of it

One of my chicks has become obsessed with the waterer, he likes to run up and kick at the waterer until a piece of food or whatever else falls off his foot and then he bites it out of the water. It's not a big deal and the chick seems fine, but I would prefer that he starts eating food normally...

    New chicks dying

I keep mine on puppy pads until they have grit. Sometimes if they have blockages, you can massage the crop to help clear it. They can have grit early if you want, if they were outdoors with hen - they would be eating grit right away. No age is too young, but make sure not to overfeed grit.

3 New Silkies hatched 1 has no eyes open. Whats the chances of it making it?

Was the chick born without eyes? There's no chance of that chick making it unless you do all feedings yourself by hand. I have dealt with severely disabled chickens before and they cannot survive unless you handfeed consistently. If the chick has eyes and they're just shut, you can pry them...

    Frizzle/"sizzle" silkie chick?

I find her really cute too and it's hard not to pick her up all the time haha, she's also the biggest of the bunch and a little bully! Hopefully she grows out of that. 😆

    Frizzle/"sizzle" silkie chick?

I thought I would give you an update! The chick did appear to be a sizzle, wings are much more turned out now. Cute chick, can't wait to see how it looks as an adult!

Do you think it’s important to raise and socialize your own chicks?

That wasn't really the issue, I was just confused on what evidence he had that people were less experience than him. Just a weird baseless claim for no reason.

Do you think it’s important to raise and socialize your own chicks?

I'm confused as to why you came into this thread to claim other people are wrong and then linked some guys thoughts on hormones. I'm a professional falconer who trains wild animals and I have owned chickens for three decades too. No need to come in and pretend everyone else is dumb except you.

Do I have to clean my chicks?

Thank you for this tip, I have one who had trouble with digestion and now they've had pasty butt for a week straight, never though to trim his puffy butt feathers. Maybe it will solve the issue, I've just been slicking them down with coconut oil hoping the poop will slide off (it doesn't.. lol.)
