Two year-oldCinnamon queen still laying daily, but my two-year-old Easter egger has called it quits for four days. Not sure what’s going on.

2 large raccoons spotted in yard last night. Improvement suggestions greatly appreciated.

The rats just dig outside of the hardware cloth skirt and dig under and come on in the run whenever they feel like it, especially in the night time, which leaves large rat trails that other critters can use. I have since laid hardware cloth across the entire run and up the sides to match wire...

Unfortunately, a week later are beautiful white feather footed Brahma died. We don’t know what happened to her. She just was on the ground and gave her last breath. We did not do an autopsy.(!) Perhaps she was egg bound, but I really don’t know.

Hey friends, This odd egg was laid today, Either by our feather footed Brahma or cinnamon queen. Either way, do you think there’s a problem here? Last week we had a regular shape, but a tiny egg delivered and I think it’s from the same girl who did this…

Water freezing in winter - didn't freeze last year

Sorry for the delay. No it cools off enough for them, and I think it helps warm them up.

Water freezing in winter - didn't freeze last year

I’ve had success wrapping the 5 gallon bucket in a big thick wool blanket, bungee cord around it and blanket over the top and put plastic over the top of the lid that screws on the bucket. I fill the bucket half full with super hot water, then put it in its place in their run, (on a towel on top...

What to use to make run smell fresh and clean?

I scatter the straw & poop from my coop out into the run. That straw and the ground which is mostly dirt now, mix when the chickens (4) scratch around. Some smell, but on dry days, the run (about 10’ x 14’) is mild in smell.adding more straw tends to help, and stirring/raking over fresh poops...

Mice in the chicken run! How do I eliminate them?

We currently have a 5 gallon bucket with openings in the bottom for the chickens to eat from. So most likely we are feeding rats also. I am looking into getting the treadle style feeder options. Have you used the brand called ratproofchickenfeeder?

Recommendations on coop bedding, nesting material and run floor material

I really like the deep straw method in the coop, turning it every few days and then taking some out into the run and the girls move that around over their dirt floor. Very minimal cost or smell.

Mice in the chicken run! How do I eliminate them?

What about rats? I’m pretty sure we’ve got rats now that spring is here and there are big holes around our skirted run, unti and out of our run :(

    Dusty Run

We are new to chickens, coops and runs, and this is extremely informative! I had read about adding leaves and Pine needles from my yard so I have done that but our daughter who is my “co-chicken raiser” didn’t want to add leaves. I will cut and paste and send this info to her so she’s on the...

Getting chickens into coop at night.

Hey, I’m just curious, if it’s OK that the gals sleep on two different roosts. I don’t know if they argue over who gets the upper & who gets the lower or if they just settle in, but they seem to just get up there… not really using the ramps and they don’t scoot over on the long roost that is...

Getting chickens into coop at night.

Finally get back! It took a while to find this thread too! They are all sleeping in the new coop now, up in the roost, yay! The first night, I put them up on the roosts and covered the doorway so they couldn’t get out. The next day we removed the old coop that they had been sleeping “on top of”...
