I keep my 2 Easter Eggers in their run that's attached to their coop. Coyotes come around looking for a chicken meal. In the summer I make ice cakes out of greens. I also like to stick dandelion greens through the spaces in the top of the run, so they jump to grab them. In the winter I give them...
The last time I read this article, my chickens had lost a few feathers and were still laying eggs. Then the molt really started! The coop is full of feathers, and it's been a couple of weeks since I had eggs. I'm giving them meal worms and other protein foods, and I'm see the nice, new feathers...
My chickens are having a soft molt. I'm seeing feathers everywhere, but no bald spots. I'm also noticing bright new feathers. I've noticed that they are eating a lot more lately. I'll be adding more protein to their diet!
Mine lay at any time. I'm more likely to have an egg or two in the late morning or afternoon than in the early morning or evening. I have two Easter Eggers and each one lays on her own schedule I might have one in the morning and one in the afternoon, or two at the same time, or none at all. I...
I had a bird's preening toy that they played with for a little while. They love it when I give them a hunk of rabbit hay. They scratch and peck at it and after it's destroyed, they still toss and scratch at the individual wisps of hay.
I freeze my chickens' water for hot days like what we're having in AZ right now. I have three drinkers. I fill two of them 3/4 of the way with water and in the morning, I take one and fill it the rest of the way with water. Later in the morning I finish filling the other one and put it in the...
This was very helpful. I like to hose down my coop with a fine spray. I also give my chickens Ice water twice a day, and I make "ice cakes" with fruits and vegetables for their treats.
I needed this article! We've been having excessive heat warnings every day for a couple of weeks now. My egg production dropped, and my ladies were stressing from the heat. So, I've been taking action to help them cool down a little. I have plastic drinkers that I fill halfway with water and...
Last week I saw a bee swarm in one of the trees in our yard. It moved on, but I had concerns about bees thinking that my chicken coop might be a good home. I started with four chickens but now I have two, and I blocked off two of the nest boxes. Yesterday our exterminator inspected the area and...
I loved this article! I already do some of the things listed. I have had exotic pet birds for years, and I do a lot of the same things for my chickens.
I appreciate all guidelines concerning what to feed chickens. I like to slip dandelion greens through the mesh on top of their run, so they have to jump for it. I also like to spread natural peanut butter on whole grain bread and cut it up into little pieces. One hen grabs a piece and runs with...
Mine are made of aspen fibers and have a brown paper back. I got them on Amazon. I don't like to use plastic. They are flat, but the chickens get into the nest box and dig at it until they have a nice bowl shaped depression.
I have tried hay, but I found that nesting pads work the best with my ladies. I have two, and they use the same nest box. They can still make their own nest with it. They kick the hay out of the nest box.
I have two 8-month-old Easter Eggers and they average two eggs a day. One started laying last November and the other one in December. I live in Southeast Arizona. I noticed that when the temps dropped to the 20s at night they didn't lay, but they did during the warmer temps in the daytime...
