    Losing throat feathers

Thank you for the quick response! If that's the case, would something like a Pick No More work? There's no bloody spots like I'd expect if it were someone pulling out feathers, so I'm not sure what's what I could put on there to discourage it.

    Losing throat feathers

Hey everyone. I have one lady (Artemis, the Barred Rock) that just started losing some feathers on her throat randomly and today I noticed the spot looks a little bigger. Finally got pictures today. She's eating, drinking, and acting normally (other than being quieter than she used to be - she...

Fake Eggs in Nesting Boxes-- Good Idea, Nah, or Meh?

Once my first lady started laying them in the sand of the run, I added 2 fake wooden eggs to each nesting box and immediately she started using the nesting boxes, and all the others followed suit. I am a firm believer that they helped my girls know where to lay. Now I have a cuckoo marans...

    Turkeys 101?

Hi all, I know I'm late to the party, but I'm currently researching turkeys to start raising next year. I've read about the dangers with free ranging, but what about predators like raccoons or possums in their coop or run? Do they try to get turkeys like they do chickens? I'm wondering if I...

Comment by 'JnAP' in article 'Do Chickens Have Feelings?'

Great article! I agree 100%! This is our first flock and I'm actually honored that they clearly see me as not just the food and treat lady, but a flock member. I spend time with them every day (I call it my chicken therapy, lol) and have learned so much from them about their feelings and...

First egg AND made friends with the roo!!

I had the BEST chicken day today!! I found my first egg this afternoon!! My sweet girl, Scarlett laid our first ever egg. She's an Ameraucana and she's the sweetest lap girl! I'm so excited for her! And as if that wasn't the most exciting thing, my roo, Buford, actually accepted me today and...

Comment by 'JnAP' in article 'Understanding Your Rooster.'

Thank you for the reply! I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed hearing this, because some of the girls really enjoy being held, as they hop up into my lap on their own without me picking them up. I spend time in the run with them everyday and they clearly see me as part of the flock...

Thank you @Shadrach for taking the time to write this article. As a first time chicken mom with a roo in the flock, this helped me understand some of the behaviors I'm seeing. I do have a question, though. My 7 hens and 1 roo are 19 weeks old, and some of the girls like to hop in my lap for...

    Chick diarrhea

Yes, completely normal. Eating, drinking, playing, and chirping!

    Chick diarrhea

I also have a question regarding runny chick poop. A couple of mine have very similar poop, but not quite as runny, more like a pudding consistency, but same color as the OP's pic. It smells terrible, too. Is that also cecal poop? Mine are 5 weeks old now. I've only seen 2 or 3 of my 8 make...
